Thanks Teeb. It sure was freaky this morning and the crab did get out
of it in one piece! The first time my shrimp molted it also freaked
me out - but the shrimp shed it's hardened shell/carpace and I didn't
realize crabs do it too, just not their "shell". And thanks for the
heads up on my hermit crab probably doing it in the near future.
Though he actually tries to climb OUT of the tank via the powerheads!

First time I noticed my hermits had done it, I was sure there was some
cannibal living in there, lol. Then realized I could still count the exact
number I had originally bought, still crawling around in the tank. The
hermit shedding look more like real hermit bodies than even the crab and
shrimp shedding look like themselves, so it's harder to convince yourself
nothing is wrong, lol.

what this is is the animals exo-skeleton. crustaceans have a skeleton on
the outside of their body, which they shed regularly as they outgrow it.
its called an exo-skeleton.
