View Full Version : Howdy Folks! New to the group and ponds :ŹD

Hi Everyone!
Just thought I would introduce myself (the better half is lurking over my
left shoulder kibitzing)
We recently retired (very young for retirees, God Bless the Union!!) and
decided to go on a grand adventure. We sold our home in central California
and moved to west Tennessee. Ahhh... this is heaven!
Our little place is 10.5 acres and came with a delightful "little" pond. Our
pond is 80-90 feet across and we are guessing at 15-20' deep in the middle.
Currently we have three turtles, one appears to be a largish (15" shell)
snapper about ten zillion frogs and their evil spawn and don't know if there
are any fish or not. We had two snakes swim across the pond earlier, well
halfway. They looked like water mocassins, so they are swimmin with the
fishes now, if you get my drift.
So, while trying to figure out what to do about an algae problem we are
having I found your group. Looks like you have a great bunch of people here
and we are looking forward to learning a lot.

Welcome!

Use barley straw for algae control.
There are tons of sites telling how barley straw works on algae, just
use a search engine to search for 'barley straw'

By the way group and BV, SVTKate is just a perfect lady, we have hung out
together in the Mustang group for a while!
Very helpful, quick learner. A shame she chose to leave wonderful
California for Georgia!
Do ask her about her lovely Mustang, and her guns! And you should see her
property and her pond I mean her lake!
Anyway, welcome Kate! You will love it here! Totally different from the
more rowdy Mustang crowd

Would that be Mustang, as in a Ford car? Or Mustang, as in wild horses? I hope
this question doesn't sound too naive. I do have a reason for asking.

Well, you see ... the thing about my Mustang is that she is kind of both.
She is a sleek white beauty with a heart of gold, the grace of a wild
Mustang and speed and agility of a Cobra.
Her name is "Sugar". I call her "Shug" for short.
I named her that because 9 out of 10 men that see her say "oh MAAANNN..
she's Sweet!!"
Shug is a 1998 Mustang Cobra, Drop Top.
(and the most fun you can have with your clothes on!)
Not trying to plug my site, but if you want to see her, here is a link to my

Oh peshaw...you should see my '95 Volkswagon Jetta. We call her Chewy
because when you turn the steering wheel sounds like Chewbacca. It's only
missing two pieces of door trim. The sun roof doesn't work, but all of the
windows still crank down just fine. Now THAT's sweet.

Actually just a few 50 pound bales, put in the water so that half is
submerged.
I don't recall what you said you had, but if you have running water,
put a bale in it too.
>You have to watch him, he's a rabble rouser *grin*
Good, so am I :-)
OK.. back to the green lake problem.
you need aeration ... and the barley straw (or so they say).
aeration is what keeps water from getting skanky. for a lake you need serious
aeration, so give aquatic ecosystems a call. their catalog is online.
I really dont think a lake needs filtration unless you are going to go into the fish
business.

Nice car. Thanks for clearing that one up. My brother has a friend who details
Mustangs. He has a Canary yellow Mustang (I don't know what year it is, but it
is a recent model), and recently rebuilt the engine. He put a supercharger on
it, took it to Kentucky Motor Speedway, and drove it around the track at 140
mph.

I really have no idea what the quality is.
It is whatever Mother Nature has provided.
I can tell you that it is clear as far down as you can see, to the algea
that is. The wildlife is thriving, for whatever that's worth.
I was really instrested in the Isralei Carp idea. The locals told me that
two of them should be able to keep the pond clear.
It's much too large to try to put pumps and filters on, that and it's quite
a ways down the hill from our home. I'll saya little over a hundred yards. I
think it would be cost prohibitive to run power down there, let alone the
bill to operate a pump and filter for that much water. Hubby says he figures
about 18,000 gallons ... if I remember correctly

Read it and it will answer a lot of your questions.
You can also contact your local county extension office.
It is beautiful and with proper management it will stay
