I inherited some live rock from someone shutting their tank down. Rock had
good form/shapes, but was not in good shape i.e., blackened at a portion,
smelling, etc.

I'm not sure if I did the right thing, but I started out by cleaning out the
rock in freshwater, scrubbing, etc. The rock looks better, but I think I
prob killed all the critters that make the live rock "live".

Would it be worth continuing? the rock is currently curing (seperate tank,
skimmer, etc), and I was considering purchasing some seed live rock and
putting it in after a week but not sure if/when to do this.

When you wash it, always use sal****er instead of freshwater.
And, if you have live rock in your display tank, you don't need to buy
another live rock. After curing, you just put your rock into your display
tank.
Also, if you want to seed live rock in separate tank, just test your water
for ammonia and nitrate. If they are low, you can put another live rock for
seeding.
