View Full Version : Newbie - Eclipse System Question

Mary
January 10th 04, 05:47 AM
Hi, all!

Hope someone can guide me. I've tried to do my homework, but...

I bought an Eclipse System 12 and have it set up and running - plan to leave
it there for a week before adding my fish to it.

Stupid question I have is about the air bubbles. Does the Eclipse System
need something else for that? It said it's all inclusive, but most tanks
I've ever seen have the bubbles coming up somewhere and this one doesn't -
just has the biowheel.

Is anyone familiar with this particular tank?

Thanks for the guidance & my fish thanks you, too! He's in a little one
gallon tank w/no filter (but it has the air bubbles!) and that's been his
only home until now.

Trust the biowheel for now.

And one fish....then see www.thekrib.com on cycling.

Then wait three weeks and add another or two.

Patience.

Bubbles are not necessary, I don't have any air pumps in either of my tanks.

Don't put too much water in the tank! Fill only enough to leave a gap of
one inch or so below the biowheel "waterfall" so the dropping water can
agitate the tank's surface. Same aeration effect as bubbles.

If you later find your fish sucking air... then you can consider a separate
pump and air-stone to make bubbles.

Check your water temperature (cheap digital thermometer from the
supermarket) and you MAY find the Eclipse pump is warming the water
enough to render a separate heater unnecessary. This is a "feature" of my
2-gallon Eclipse.

Yeah, it looks like there's quite a few bubbles floating through from the
filter pour.

I did buy a thermometer today and it's reading at 73 or 74 without a heater.
Does that mean I can only buy goldfish unless I add a heater? That's what
I'm seeing from most of what I've read.

That's correct.

General wisdom around here is to not get a goldfish at all for a small
tank, since they're unusually messy fish. The low 70s temperatures
you're seeing are the bottom range for most hobby fish. Considering
that this is winter (I'm guessing you're in Ohio), it's fair to guess
that your tank temperature will go up to the mid or high 70s in
summer.

Perfectly good range for most fish. I wouldn't worry about a heater
unless you're seeing large variations from day to night.

How'd you guess Ohio? From the temp of my tank (you're a genius) or from my
e-mail address? :) curiosity kills...

Your message header shows "buckeye-express", so it wasn't much of a
leap. I checked to see if I could determine where you were posting
from so that I wouldn't discuss winter temperature when it didn't
apply. We get some folks here from down-under from time to time, so it
pays to look closer.

If you do buy a Goldfish...in a 12 g tank you could only house one.

Bummer! I'm debating on what to do now. Are you saying I shouldn't add
*any* other fish - even other types - with him in the tank?

If that truly is the case, and adding more would be detrimental to the
fish's environment, I think I'll call a little local store and see if
they'll take him - although I've already gotten to like him!

If ever I do screw up in the future and ask a store to take back a fish, how
do they feel about that? Wouldn't they be nervous considering it could have
disease or toxins that they don't know about? I'm surprised they might take
fish off anybody they don't know.

Hi Mary.
Yes, that would mean you couldn't put anything else in with him.
Many shops will take in fish that appear to be healthy. Most will give you
store credit.
If the store sold you a Goldie for your 12g tank...tell them they neglected to
tell you that you wouldn't be able to house anything else in with it and that
it would actually grow too large for that 12g anyway.
Do some research on proper Goldfish care, and then go back in armed with
knowledge. Shops tend to treat you differently when you know what you're doing.
It's sad and wrong, but it's true.

in the interest of tact, an accusation of neglection may not be the best way to
procede when trying to get a refund or credit. something about honey instead of
vinager... :-)

Yes, I agree.
I would have to assume they would use their own words.
However, I fully agree with you, but there are ways to be tactful and let them
know that they screwed up too.
