Hello. Don't know what I've done wrong or how to change it. My
pearlscale started to sit on the bottom at certain times of day.
Mostly in the morning and at night. As soon as I put food in he is by
far the most aggresive feeder of the four. Yesterday he sat there
looking so sad and I was at a loss. I went to the pet store and bought
some anti-biotic food. They hate it but eat some. All the water
parameters are fine. No ammonia, no nitrites and the nitrates are
currently around 10ppm. The did get to about 40 at the weekend so I
did a water change to make sure the 'sitting on the bottom' wasn't a
result of this. PH is around 7.8. Today he is a bit more mobile but
now my black moor is doing the same. I just don't get it. They have
had no 'fresh, frozen' food given so can't think of any way that
something harmful has been introduced. I give them freeze dried,
flakes, peas, orange slices daphnia, blood worms, shrimp and tubifex
worms. I did think that it could be a result of the weather getting
warmer but I have my ac set at around 72 and the tank thermometer shows
that the water stays as warm as room temperature.

Any suggestions please? I am really at a loss.

Thanks in advance
Mellie

This really sounds like nitrite toxicity... Are you 100% sure there are
no nitrites in the tank? Perhaps something else got into the tank.

Is there anything else unusual about the fish, no matter how small?

Focus on water quality and see if that helps. Change some water every
few days (25% is good) and add lots of fresh, high-quality carbon to the
filter. Clean the gravel really well as you do the extra water changes.
Also consider running with 1 tbsp salt/5 gallons of water for a while.

Thanks. Will give this a try. I did a water test on Saturday and it
came up nice and blue for no nitrites. There is something odd going
on. They do eat fine and I've seen the other 2 fish have bowel
movements but not these 2 in a while. I've been out a lot lately so
doesn't mean anything really. I'll do another water test and change
and put some salt in. They are only being given the anti-biotic food
so hopefully that will cover all angles. I'm off on vacation really
soon so this coudln't have come at a worse time.

If you have started antibiotics make sure you follow through with however
long the directions say to use. Do you think its bacterial? I always worry
about using them before knowing what is wrong because if you figure out what
it is and have to treat with something else...well its never a good idea to
stop them to soon.
I have never used the antibiotic food only the pills you open up.
Do they seem bloated at all? Could it be constipation maybe give them some
pea's, the first thing I do when I think something is wrong is water changes
and you doing that so that's good. There is a good page on GF disease let me
see if i can find it.......

Check this page out and see if you can find anything that rings a bell

Hi, glad it isn't just mine. Well sad too that you are experiencing
the same thing. I've put salt in and done a 25% water change and yet
they still sit on the bottom. The funny thing is that they get up as
soon as I walk past thinking they are going to be fed. I started the
anti-biotic food as the water parameters are fine and I am just
clueless as to what it is. If the water is good and they are showing
no signs of a parasite then I thought maybe it is bacterial.

One is 6 months old and the other 5. I was going to add some carbon
but only took some out just over a week ago and they were doing this
before I took it out. It just now seems more regular.

thanks everybody for you help. Much appreciated

Anytime there is a sudden behavior change with fish, something is going
on. Listless and sitting on bottom, the first thing to check is the
temperature. These are also symptoms of a bacterial infection. I would
have done the same thing - start feeding a medicated food. They will
eat it a little better if you were to mix a few drops of fish or shrimp
oil in it. Watch for thin white fish waste - symptoms of an internal
bacterial infection. TMP-sulfa, sulfa 4TMP, or triple sulfa powder
might head off any real problems.

Well, it could be. High levels of nitrAtes most likely means you
haven't been keeping up with the water changes. Not keeping up with
water changes means a jump in DOCs, thus a jump with the levels of
opportunistic bacteria. These germs constantly test the fishs immune
system to gain a foot hold. Consider what type of bacteria comes with
high levels of DOCs. Heterophate bacteria breaks down solids - DOCs.
With an increase of DOCs comes an increase of bacteria (bloom) - once
this bacteria bloom does its job (breaking down the DOCs), their next
solids in the tank would be the fish - once they attack the fish,
antibiotics are needed to kill the bacteria........... Frank

Cheers Frank.

I do a 25% water change religiously every Monday. I've done 3 this
week and no difference although if bacteria had got in it wouldn't make
much of a difference. I stir the gravel up so much that I sometimes
think it is cleaner than my own floor :-) The temperature was my main
concern as it is very difficult to stop it getting too warm in there.
I have the ac on permanatley so hoping that it doesn't get too warm in
there.

They have had a little more life this evening. Could be because of the
water change, food or the fact that the temperature has dropped and it
is bloody freezing.

How did people keep tanks cool before ac? Anyway the thermometer says
that it is about 72-74 which it has been throughout the winter and we
haven't had much of a problem.

My other concern is that my PH seems to have gone up. It was around
7.6 and is now 7.8. Should I add some peat to the filter or not play
around with it?

So funny that once there is food in the tank they act like nothing is
wrong.

Cheers everybody

Totally agree. Would have probably ended all this 'fish stuff' a long
time ago if it wasn't for the people on this board. So patient with me
and my silly newbie questions.

Bought a magazine earlier and then decided that the people on here know
far more :-)

Mine eat and have a good appetite, then return to the bottom.

I started the

I'm taking a wait and watch attitude. I have no space to bring them in so
they'll have to sink or swim as they say. I stopped buying fish now and
will wait awhile. There's just too many problems with them "dropping dead"
as about 4 have done now with no symptoms whatsoever. Scrapes show nothing!
All were treated for parasites when while in quarantine. Now I have a small
bubble eye that's right-side-up at the surface and can't swim down. It just
hangs there. Swim bladder no doubt. It's eating and passing feces so it's
not this infamous GF constipation. Then I come here an read about the
troubles other people are having. When I have enough stock I can breed my
own and bypass all these problems and frustrations.

My GF tolerate temps from 38F in winter to 95 F in summer. Even fancy GF
are tolerant of a wide range of temperatures I've found out by my own
experience.

> How did people keep tanks cool before ac? Anyway the thermometer says

My active and healthy GF are now in temps of 75 to 80 as the sunroom gets
pretty warm on sunny days. The outside GF have adapted to natural changes
in temps. No need to freeze because of your fish. As long as there is good
aeration and filtration they don't need to stay so cool.

Leave it alone. They're also very tolerant of higher PHs.

Hi, have now had 2 days of my Pearl scale swimming around normally but
my black moor has basically laid on the bottom all day. Its breaking
my heart. I really knew somthing was wrong today when I put the food
in and he stayed there. Normally he would be eating like he's been
starved. Have to say that they aren't keen on the anti-biotic food but
usually they try it before they decide. Completley at a loss here.
Will do another water change in the morning but the last one made no
difference and I'm happy with the water parameters.

I saw the Pearlscale have a poo today but haven't seen my Black moor do
one for a few days. Doesn't mean he hasn't but haven't seen one.

Wish I knew a fish whisperer :-)

Koi-Lo, if you have any idea's then please share. I will do likewise
although you know more than me :-)

Cheers everybody

You know I am just grasping here, but when I had problems with one of my
goldfish a while back and was not sure what was causing it, I did daily salt
baths, you have to be careful and watch them close, I cant remember the dose
but could find it if you needed me to, any way with in a week he was doing
much better. Have you looked at him with a magnified glass? check for any
kind of spots, injuries.
Any chance you could put him in a QT tank w/ no gravel, feed him pea's and
see if he is going or not, have you gave pea's, that will help you see if
its constipation, and if not and its something else you can treat with
antibiotics with out treating the healthy fish. If you see him poop ...see
if its white and stringy

I wish I had some answers for the both of us. Unfortunately, I don't. I
had tossed in a few strings of pondweek from the smaller pond in with my
"bottom resting" goldfish. The koi eggs attached to the weed hatched in
less than a week. The koi fry would be showing symptoms by now if the GF
had some disease. They're not. They're swimming around happily and have
visibly grown. It's hard to know what chemicals the GF were subject to
before I bought them or what damage it could have done to them. I'm just
not going to buy any new fish for awhile. I saw too many "bottom resters"
in both of my favorite LFSs recently.

I remember someone telling me a few years ago that some of the chemicals
added to shipping bags can cause permanent liver, or was it kidney damage to
fish that only shows up later. I don't know if this is true. I'm not
saying this is causing the problem but it's something to think about.

Do you ever wander if your fish are 'playing you'? Today my black moor
is back to his normal self. Not seen him resting on the bottom at all
and now my pearl scale is down there. Its like they are taking it in
turns. They both lay in exactly the same spot. Have also seen both of
the poo today so don't think it is the constipation. I just don't know
what to make of it. I am doing some extra water changes and adding the
salt. Very reluctant to make another hospital tank as I ended up with
a lone fry last time :-) Now need him to grow so I can put him with
the others. I do have another tank which I could use but I don't know
who to put in there. Yesterday it was the black moor, today the
pearlscale. I'm baffled. Think I will continue with the anti-biotic
food, water changes and salt and keep an eye. No symptoms of parasites
or injuries. I think they know i'm going on vacation soon and don't
want me to go :-)

No, but perhaps like us something disagreed with them that they ate. Or
another fish stressed them out... who knows?!?!

I honestly don't either. The 3 in the outdoor pool seldom move, eat fine at
feeding time and then,... just "do nothing." Meanwhile the young koi are
partying out.

I am doing some extra water changes and adding the

I remember. :-)) I'm just going to take a watch and wait attitude where
these 3 I have are concerned.

I don't believe moving them would help. It would stress them as they get
used to their home tank. The added stress may make whatever problem they
have worse.

Despite what some people claim I haven't seen any harm come to GF from
natural outdoor temperature changes. Even fancy GF live through the winter
here where the temps drop below freezing for days at a time and ice forms on
their ponds or tubs. I add a heater just to keep an opening in the ice for
gas exchange.

Indoors they have no heaters so the water is about the same as the sunroom
temp year round. Cooler in winter and warmer in summer. Also warmer in the
day than at night when the sun is shining.

The only loss I had due to temp' was outdoors last spring. The koi and GF
fry were maybe a week old when the temps dropped to freezing. About 50% of
them died. But they were extremely tiny.

Someone really needs to report you to the humane society or post your

to do in fish, ort at least thats all we know about........I can see

fish get upset, **** in tank, watch fish get even more upset. Place
tank in sun, watch water go to 110 deg, place tank with fish in frige,
watch fish get cold, post on internet, what can I do to my poor fishy
that just sets there?
