View Full Version : Fish Recommendation?

Can anyone recommend a peaceful fish for a community tank (20 gallon -
freshwater) that would like to live in a small, broken clay jar at the
bottom of the tank - preferably a fish that likes to stick its head
out of the hole in the pot (the hole's diameter is about 1.5 inches).
BTW, I'm really not interested in a loach ... something colorful would
be nice, but not necessary. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I had a Black Ghost that loved to do this from a 1" hole in a 6" tall castle.
The larger ones are 3-4" long and more, though.

Be well,

Our Spotted Dojo is the rock star of our tank. We just adore him.
Named Lu Tse. Sure, he's a loach. Or is he? Technically, I think
he's supposed to be a goldfish. Misgurnus aguillicauda.

He'd love something like a clay jar. He'd keep it absoulutely clean.
He'd hide under it until you thought he was dead, and then for no
apparent reason, go totally nuts and swim around with extreme speed.

It's been a long time, and my memory is very fuzzy, but I remember this:

A friend of mine was deeply into fish, long before I had any idea about
them, and certainly decades before I discovered that I too could have
fish. So anyway, he had I guess a 250 gallon tank just for his
Cichlids, and numerous other tanks for various things. I remember very
clearly though, this one fish... If it was a fish... That had to live
in his own 25 gallon tank. I don't know whether it was marine or fresh.
He lived under the gravel. You never saw him. Ever. Until you
dropped a feeder fish into the tank. Then the gravel exploded, while
this monstrosity leapt up to eat, and just as quick, went back to hide
under the gravel. Scary. Not just because the fish was scary, but also
scary that a person would choose a pet where the only enjoyment you ever
got was watching it scarf a minnow or whatever.

This person spent a lot of time in Hawaii, doing lots of stuff like
triathlons. I imagine it's some fish that's common there (which leads
me to guess it's of the tropical marine variety?)

Any idea what that thing was from my vague description? I've never seen
anything like it since... It's been well over 20 years ago since I've
seen the person, longer than that since I'd been to his house (or seen
his fish).

Goldfish are coldwater fish and shouldn't go with freshwater/tropicals

I realize that, but he does fine, and seems happy enough in our 78 degree tank.

I see, in that case 1 in that sized tank ain't gonna make a tremendous
difference.
