I've got 2 tiger oscars 9" and 8" long. I'm looking to sell them. My
problem is that i have absolutly no idea what they are worth. So, any
suggestions on what's a fair price? It would be greatly appreciated.

$10 USD a piece...Other wise you might get an offer from a dealer of about
$5 USD each..

If you want to sell fish for money, oscars are not the way to go. Theyre
simply too big for most people to keep. Your basically asking someone to
take them off your hands. The only fish Ive seen that will bring real
money are Discus, and a lot of the african cichlids..where an adult male
can bring as much as $100 (peacocks, etc.)

I'm afraid that they have no real value, unless you are lucky enough to
find someone that wants to buy them. Someone elses big fish are a burden to
most. LFS can't give them away when they get that big, and they cosr $$$ to
feed. You may get lucky by posting here, where you are located?

It also depends where you live,, I,ve seen 5 inch Oscars go for $80 +
But I live in Oz where large fish of that type are rare, Oscars your size
would fetch twice that.

Hi Ryan --

I read the other responses to your post. I'd take their comments with
a grain of salt. I looked around (on my usual weekly LFS tour) and
discovered two shops here in El Paso that have large Oscars for sale.
One had a pair, each one around seven inches, that were going for $25
each. The proprietor tells me that he sells these large specimens at a
brisk pace.

The other place in town is quite a legend -- it's a Jolly Jim's pet
shop in a local mall (Bassett, if you happen to live in El Paso) --
This guy sells large Cichlids (mostly Oscars and a few Dempseys) for
around $70 each. Yep, seventy. Each time I go in there's a different
group of fish, and he tells me that they sell quite briskly! I would
tell people to go getcha an Oscar at PetSmart for $4.99 and feed it
for a year to get the same result, but apparently there's people
willing to pay the big bucks for the instant gratification. This
fellow is quite an aquarist, so I don't doubt that he makes sure that
the new owner has the correct aquarium and attitude for his new pet.
(You know, come to think of it, it might not be "Jolly Jim's", it
might be another one of those chains -- name slips my mind right now)

Experience over the last few years, however, leads me to think that
around $25 to $30 is a fair price for an healthy adult Oscar. I guess
it depends on your sales ability! :-)

Regards, Mark

This is a tricky question. Worth is based on what someone else is
willing to pay. If your area is saturated with fish stuff than you will
not get much for them, but if your area is sparse than you can make a
good bit of change.

It may make more sense to eat it than sell it? Pan fried Oscar is quite
the delicacy they tell me. Tastes like.......

Thanks for the tip, Paul.. We are in Australia, where they play Rugby in
Heaven, The World Cup is on at the moment, and the kiwi's had a lot of
trouble with the Welsh, the other night.. I digress, Please excuse my
rantings, I live in the hills, and the altitude does affect, whats left of
my brain cells.

Anyway,, as I was saying Large fish do command large prices,, I wandered
into my local Aquarium [[ Coffs Harbour, NSW]] and there in a 6ft tank was
one large, fat Oscar, around 6 or 7 inches. With that "poor me" look, Next
thing someone came in complete with a Nappy bucket, handed over $150.00 aus
which is about 120 us dollars and left, with a very happy look on his
face..
They also have a pair [two's a pair] of orange Discus around one and 1/2
inches accross, for $85.00 each. and they won't last long 6 stripe
Formosia's
they start at $120.00
each..

We just don't have the fish supplies here that you people in North America
enjoy. You would think that with the Great Barrer Reef, our Marine Fish
would be plentyfull,, But there also in very short suppy, and very expencive

Gees, looks like I should get into business when I get back to
Saskatchewan. Bog tank and lots of food and filtration. Make them Oscars
grow, grow, grow.... I can't get very muc for them here in California..
Apparently no one likes over aggresive Oscars eatting all thier pretty
little fishes... tsk tsk...

Timmer.. Soon to be back in Saskatchewan....
