Are you sure the counter can support the weight? 29G is over 300 lbs.
It's probably OK, but you sound like you need more to worry about. :-)

Yes, that's plenty, it amounts to a 75% PWC.

Probably, yes.

It shouldn't, provided you move the filtration system
as well as any gravel or sand with the tank.

That's a good one to be concerned about. If at all possible, you
should try to have someone there to at least keep you company
(and to dial 911 if need be) just to be on the safe side.

Ok, back to lurk-mode for a while....

no need to save any water, your fish will be healthier for the algae on the glass,
all your biobugs are in the filter or on the glass, not in the water. Ingrid

I have a 100gal, Aquaclear 500, and keeping goldfish.
I keep seeing posts on UGF (undergravel filters). Are they
really effective? Would it work really well in tandem with the Aquaclear,
I'm thinking of making a custom UGF using Eggcrate and tubes and a plastic
mesh screen,
But I wonder if it's really worth the effort?

Personally would pass on UGF. If you need more bio filtration I'd add an
Emperor 400 or a pro bio wheel to a canister filter of some sort. Even a
pro system only powered by a powerhead would be a big improvement over UGF.
IMHO of course

they work, but are waaaaay more trouble than they are worth in constant cleaning and
the other problems they pose. INgrid

I know it sounds a little odd, but once I got a diseased fish, and
somehow there must have been some residue on the gravel (I guess it
wasn't boiled long enough). It was a 10 "gal" tank and the filter and
all was running, so when all the diseased fish died (which was all) I
kept the filter running as normal, put some bleach in it (not too much
-- maybe 150 mL) and let the filter run for a week, after which I rinsed
everything very very well, and that seemed to do the trick for me -- it
gets everything and is relatilely inexpensive, and quite effortless
(except for the rinsing, but that's not hard at all).

Depending on the sunlight that window gets, might want to monitor the water
temp......had one in front of a window once and the temps swung from 60
during the evenings and night to over 100 during the late afternoons.....no
fish in the tank at that time just plants....phew....
