sad news

I have posted previously that I have a goldfish tank in a communal
living situation. Well, had.

This morning I went downstairs to feed the goldfish and found the two
larger single tails immobile on the bottom and the two fantails floating
belly up. And from the kitchen doorway I could smell alcohol. During the
night somebody had poured enough alcohol to noticeably raise the water
level in a 29 gallon tank.

I am very sad and angry and I don't know if I have the heart to give
goldfish-keeping another try.

omg , id find who did it and id kill the #$%@#$*^, id make them replace
everything. id get em arrested too for animal cruelty.

That really sucks. I'm sorry for you and the fish. I would
also worry about rooming with people (I don't know your
situation) who would casually do something like that.
I hope you can sit down with your roommates and have a
discussion with them about this.

Y-M,

I am really sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you don't give up
on fishkeeping. When you're feeling ready, clean everything well
(alcohol is water soluble, so you should be able to clean up with
lots of rinsing). You'll probably need to re-cycle the tank.

As to the perpetrator, do try to find the guilty party. If it's a kid,
you've got a serious problem--killing animals is one of the big
warning bells for psychopathology.
