Floating hydrometer question by
Mark Cooper
I picked up a floating hydrometer and I'm wodering if they are affected by
barometric pressure? When I float it in RO water it reads 1.004. Since I'm
located in Iowa, which is above sea level a bit, will this affect the
reading a bit?
As it is, I use 1.004 as a base reading and adjust...

Filaments of brown algae : problem in established tank by
jjbunn
I have a serious problem in my 55g reef. This tank is about 5 years
old, and is well established. I've kept reefs for about 15 years, so
thought I'd seen everything, but this has me beaten.
The symptoms are that everything is covered in brown algae, which is
more dense nearer the light (10K MH...

Remote sump placement by
Phil Cav
Getting back in the hobby after several years out and am currently planning
a reef in my new house. We really did not plan the house with a reef in mind
so we have some obstacles. One, the sump will have to be quite always away
from the tank (1st Floor tank and Sump in the basement). Is it...

Kold-sterile vs. RO/DI by
Bryan
I know the reef community preaches RO/DI. I'm wondering if anyone on this
forum has had any personal experience with the Kold-sterile filtration
system. I just don't like having my water being wasted making RO/DI.
I only find some old articles/forums about this product. Sounds like they
were...

Pulsing Xenia by
EMM
I have a beautiful piece of pulsing xenia that grows vigorously. Every
month of so I cut it back to try and control it. Sometime little pieces
of it fly loose and set hold on my live rock in places where I do not
want it to grow.
I was wondering if any one had suggestions as to how to control...

Are the Tunze pumps quiet? by
George Patterson
I'm thinking of buying a Tunze 6060. Anyone out there have one? How much noise
do they make?

Aquascaping by
Steve
I'm about to move my 40 gal reef (Fri) to set it on a new stand. As long as
I'll have almost everything removed, I wonder if anyone has any good
guidelines on aquascaping. I know that all should "firm" so things don't
tumble (like they do now). I want to maximize the number of corals I can...

Pod-Feeding by
StringerBell
Now that I have loads of pods in my cycling tank, I`d like to keep the
population going. What do they eat?
I guess once I get predatory fish in there, I`m gonna see a lot less pods.
Is there something I can do now within the tank itself--(IE: NOT separate
tanks, refugiums etc)) that will help ensure...

KH and Cal, Salifert test kits by
Inabón Yunes
I've been using the Hagen test kit from the start and was sure that my Cal
levels were properly read. Then I ran out of KH solutions and not being
able to buy refills for this parameter, switched to Salifert.
Well, using Hagen I was getting low Cal levels and low KH. Used buffers to
bring KH...

Not Skimming....... by
StringerBell
What does it mean if the Skimmer is not producing foam? (Its not
broken,sometimes it does,sometmes it doesnt.)
Does it mean that at that particular moment there is very little
free-floating dead organic matter in the tank?
Is this a sign of improving water quality?
another from the "newb".....

What is this?? by
Franco
Hi,
Found this guy washed up on the beach after a big storm:
http://www.dietandtraining.com/Parts/DSCF0050.JPG
About 1.5" long, has tiny pinchers in the front, have 35mm film
that shows more detail, but figured I would give it a shot with
this one digital I had.

Just Checking by
StringerBell
The water has been in for abot 3 weeks.
The Live Rock and Arag-alive sand have been in the tank for 10 days.
The ammonia has been steady at .25 for 3 days
The Nitrite at .2 for 3 days.
There are Hundreds of Pods scooting around.
About a dozen teeny-tiny snails on the glass.
About a half dozen M+M...

Faux-Reef? by
StringerBell
As my tank is cycling, I`m pondering the the thought of a kind of Faux-Reef
set-up. Not the plastic stuff!!
Im thinking of having inverts that are not that expensive or are relatively
easy to keep. (IE NOT Corals or anenomes!)
For instance: Feather Dusters----are there different varieties of...

Built-in Overflow Problem by
Jerry Baker
Hey guys,
I have a new 125-gallon glass tank with a built-in overflow. The problem
is that, even though the tank is level, the water level stays below the
plastic rim of the tank. Is there anything short of modifying the
built-in overflow that I can do to increase the water level in the...
