Lighting Struggles by
muddyfox
Hi,
I'm planning my first planted tank (well, fully planted tank - I've
always had some plants in previous tanks) and I'm really struggling to
work out how to supply the lighting I need. I'm going for a 2ft tank
and the only plant I'm absolutely hooked on growing is Riccia, because
I adore that...

"watts per gallon" by
John Sankey
"Try 70-90 lumens ... for most FL's."
My original assumption was a bit lower than that. However, when I
started checking with local aquarists, I discovered that most
were running 18-24" T12 lamps which are less efficient even when
new. I also discovered that most replaced their lamps only...

Budding Aquarium Plant grower by
Tigercha
I currently have a tank of 115litres / 30 US Gallon Tank using a fluval
3plus is it beneficial or
not to have plants for an aquarium that contains Fish, my understanding is
they help remove the
nitrites.
The tank has two four year old goldfish (one is actually a Koi)
I was looking towards the...

lining a whiskey barrel by
zxcvbob
If I buy a half whiskey barrel at HD, Menard's, or Lowe's, will clear 6
mil plastic be good enough for lining it so it will hold water? I
assume it won't hold water without a liner even after the wood swells
up. I want to plant a lotus seedling in it. I'm too cheap to buy a
commercial barrel...

Gas buildup in my substrate by
Dax MIckelson
Hello all. I've had a fish tank for most of my life. Recently I've
decided to create a tank that is mostly plants with some supportive fish.
I've created a substrate that is composed of vermiculite and soil (50/50
and about 2-3 inches deep) topped by about 1/2 inch of general purpose
sand. My...

Wow, what happened to this group? by
Dave Engle
I just signed back up for the APD, too, and it's pretty slow. Where are
all the plant nuts hanging out now? Is there a particular forum where
all the old hands are chatting? I'm about to set up my 55 gallon after
over 5 years without an aquarium and I want to brush up on my aquatic
plant...

One of my favorite plants in "red marble val" also known
as "crystal red val" and "tiger val". It really is red and
tiger striped when fed and illuminatd properly.
It's also big. Very big. The last time I had it one
plant made 4' green leaves, Iended up giving it away.
Like Ihave a 4' tall tank...

Anacharis growth by
[email protected]
Similar to another post, my anacharis is growing very very fast but
isn't very leafy. I have to cut the stalks back once a week as they
curl over when they hit the surface. The leaves are all very small
though. I like the look of thick dense anacharis, not the long stalky
look. My tank is a 10g...

Aquatic Plants in the UK by
muddyfox
Hi all,
Does anyone know of any aquatic retailers who have a good selection of
plants anywhere near me (I live in England, UK, between London and
Cambridge.)? I've been to 5 places in the last week and none have
anything I can use for carpeting and most have non-aquatic plants on
sale as if they...

Tank setup problem - Kitty litter substrate "puffing up" by
John Sankey
I've always been curious about the advice to use kitty litter in
aquaria. It's a totally uncontrolled product - there are no
standards for it at all. Some include glues to make the stuff
clump when wet, others contain unmentioned stuff to allow it to
soak up liquid better, others chemicals to...

possible DIY dosing equipment? by
[email protected]
I was thinking about possible ways to create a DIY dosing mechanism. I
have seen people using electric timers with some hoses etc. used to
measure out a little bit of ferts at a time. This is a little more
complicated than I feel I can tackle right now.
I was wondering if a hospital IV drip bag...

Light too bright? by
basserman
Can you tell me if this is the wrong light for my tank. I recently
bought a Power-Glo 18,000K 30Lux 8W light for a 6gal eclipse tank that
I'd like to grow plants in. As I do more research I've notice that
this might not be the right light for growing plants (or for keeping
the guppies happy...

When is too many plants? by
[email protected]
Hi,
I am failry new at this hobby and I am getting a bigger interest for
plants... for some reason they last longer than the fish I put in. :)
Anyway, I have a 33gal tank, I believe it is cycled now, the tests show
the tanks is stabilized.
I've been putting live plants in the tank.
I have...

It seems to contain quite a wide range of trace; the information is at
http://www.aqua-medic.de/cgi-bin/php/display_product.php3?p_id=104&lang=e

.There are some things from their range which is quite interesting.
I don't see anything that's not in Flourish and TMG.
However, it...
