Still Puzzled about Nitrites by SueAndHerZoo
Hi. If you recall I wrote about a week ago with my koi hiding and dying. Some of you suggested nitrite poisoning, which made sense, and when I tested the water, the nitrites were high. I have been doing water changes, adding salt, firing up the pump and filter, added 2 more airstones, etc. and...

Koi out of pond by Larry
I have a 10" Koi who was out of the pond when I got home tonight. Not completely dry but not breathing. Got him back in water and moved him by hand to get some water flowing through gills. He started breathing but still very weak. He's on side and having difficulty moving at all. tends to drift...

Switched Back by Tom La Bron
Well Folks, I spent the weekend replanting my lilies back into dirt from last years trial of using only pea gravel. I had concluded after the poor showing and growth from lilies last year in the pea gravel, that I would replant them like I had been doing for years. For me, this technique was a...

Mosquito Control by stricks760
I'm full of questions today... While dragging string algae out of my pond yesterday, I saw a mosquito on my arm. This is actually quite rare in my neighborhood at any time of the year. I'm guessing she was born and raised in my pond. I have a waterfall with three pools (each about 6" deep) that...

How can I create a manmade lake? by C. Smith
I have a backhoe and a stream and want to create a lake to swim in. I'm looking for info on what to do and what not to do in order to end up with a nice, clean, sustainable 1-10 acre lake. I need to know where to dig, how deep, if I need to line the basin, stuff like that. Leads to a known good...

Question about FULL pond. by jammer
The only answer i came up with on having a way for the toads (when they come in a few weeks) to get out of the pond, was to keep it filled to the rim so they can walk out! I do NOT, however, want to come home and find a dead goldfish on the side. Is this bound to happen?

Catching fish by NewbieBill
Sorry about the "test". So many questions and so much time to wait. I originally put a number of feeder comets in my new pond to kinda test my conditions and mostly so I had something to look at in my new reclaimed pond. I had reasoned all along I can always take some of them out later. Well I...

Anacharis is Gone! by Mark Mendell
Last spring, I bought a TON of anacharis. It flourished, filling up the bottom of the 15' x 30' x 4' pond. When the ice finally left, the anacharis was gone! I'm assuming that my fish had a nice winter long snack! The pond is understocked with fish. I have goldfish and a 4 or 5 smallish...

Sluices by Keith Nuttl
I have a pond that is in three pools. the water flows from the top pool to the middle pool through two sluices and to the lower pool through one sluice. The water is then pumped to the upper pool. The pools are made out of pool line, and the material used to create the sluices has decomposed. ...

Leaves in Pond by Von Fourche
A question: I have lots of trees in my yard and every Fall the leaves fall and some fall right into my little pond. I try to scoop them out but since the leaves keep falling I just leave the leaves alone in the pond until the next Summer when the pond water is warm and I can stick my arms in it...

Dark water? by G-Hoch
Hello all, I have a 50 gallon pond with 2 goldfish here in North Texas, and for some reason the water is very dark and cloudy, there doesn't seem to be a lot of algae, but I don't ever remember seeing this before. Thanks, Gary

How Clean is Clean? by BenignVanilla
It's that time of year when we're taking our hoop houses down, removing the screening, scopping debris, vacumming the ponds. How clean is clean? When I built my pond, I wanted a fairly natural look. The fact that my liner is covered in a green sweater of algae is to me a success. The fact that...
