OT - Newsgroup server problems by
zookeeper
Well, I'm soooo frustrated. After weeks of only one or two messages a
day, and many missing messages in threads, I discovered our local
newsgroup server seems to be hiccuping, or in the past few days, not
even breathing. Out of 661 threads posted recently, I've received only
about ~240 messages....

Coating on slate walkway... by
Carl Beyer
I saw in Home Depot a chemical for coating slate / stone walkways.
Didn't pay enough attentoin to the brand.
I like (as most people do) the colors that pop when I wash the sidewalk.
How do these coatings work out, and will it make them more slippery of
be hard on my koi pond (the slat is hung over...

pixi
Got a quote on finishing my pond. The fellow wants $5,280.00. He must
have been looking at how many feet in a mile. I told him to forget it as I
a have all of the equipment. The hole is dug and most of the waterfall is
dug out.
So I will continue myself with the help of a 13 year old boy. ...

Water Exchange Question by
Loretta,Victoria, B.C.
The other day I pumped out about 4 - 6 inches of water from my pond and then
refilled it. I did the same thing the next day. I wanted to get some fresh
water in my pond and figured that was a better way than just overflowing the
pond, which is what I did in the past. What I want to know is: how...

We've started digging! Pictures are posted here
http://home.comcast.net/~lyddie/picture.htm as we progress. There are only
2 pictures there so far under the "creating our water garden" section and
it's just an unfinished hole so nothing too interesting yet :).
But we have liner and we're hoping...

A Decent Fix for Algae Problems by
Audra
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share information on a product that I stumbled across
and has so far solved my algae problem. I found it while doing a
search on Google, after doing most of the helpful suggestions I have
read elsewhere and I still had water problems.
The product is called warm...

Gravel or no gravel by
Barry
Lots of folks in S. FL seem to like designing ponds with filtering systems
similar to aquarium undergravel filters. They run pvc tubes with small holes
connected to
there pumps, which then transfer the water to canister type filters. The pvc
piping is covered with a layer of gravel. I have seen...

1st Pond cleaning today....Plant request by
jammer
I had half filled the huge lugged home plastic pool with some pond
water and some tap with declor. I put the plants in there. The first
(tamed) fish, swam into the bucket, the second (young one i decided to
keep for some insane reason) was easy to catch. But the large
female....i would like to find...

Another waterfalls question by
k conover
I'm considering adding a small waterfall to my pond. My yard has a natural
slope, so it shouldn't be too hard...the pre-fab fiberglass ones seem
easiest, but are they hard to attach rocks to cover the black color?
Also, how does it impact one's utility bill to add a small waterfall,
since you have...

new website: DIY homebuild mechanical external pre-filter (UK) by
J C-W
Hi,
I've just put up plans on a site for a low budget external pre-filter for
small to medium ponds, particularly aimed at amateur or novice pond owners
in the UK, although the principles are generally applicable anywhere.
Find it at http://www.collinswebb.plus.com/otherstuff/

Does anyone have any experience with a magnit for string algae? by
John Hines
Bampa wrote:
Could it possibly work? Doesn't sound like it to me.
dissolving copper in the water is an effective treatment for algae.
There are easier (cheaper) ways to put copper ions in the water.
Does have potential poison problems to the inhabitants of the pond.

pond heater vs. de-icer by
Dennis
We just spent all summer building a 10,000 gallon pond which is 5'
deep (3' underground, 2' above). We can't decide between a $30
floating de-icer and a $1,000 propane heater. If the cost to run the
propane heater is cheaper than the electricity cost for the floater,
we'll go for the propane...

Pond Building Question by
Lynn Strickland
I've seen two approaches:
A. Put down underlayment, liner - then fill the pond to settle the liner.
Drain the pond, then put in the rocks, gravel, etc.
B. Put down underlayment, liner, rocks and gravel - before filling the pond
for the first time.
Is plan B okay?
