new pond by
Anonymous
I've just built a new backyard pond and after about a week the water
suddenly turned murky green. From what I've gathered from reading some
of the posts here I guess the problem is single cell susspended algae.
Before I start putting plants and fish into the pond, can anyone steer
me in the right...

UV Light Question by
Barry
Have 1200 gallons with a +/-900 gph pump.
What size UV light should I be looking at?
I've been told both 25 and 40w.
Are there brands that are suggested over others?

Now what do I do? by
pixi
Got all the stuff for my new pond (water garden?) the other day. Filter,
skimmer, liner, pump. Trouble is I don't think I have the brains to get it
all together and working.
Although the pond was dug a year ago it has been raining so much that I
haven't been able to get much done. And the...

Walnut Leaves Discoloration by
george kimes
My very small pond is located under some large walnut trees and the
leaves that fall cause the water to be very dark. Other than covering
the pond with netting, does anyone have some other suggestion?

It Keeps on Ticking (or should I say pumping) by
Ted
Well, I did it again. I hadn't gotten around to installing the bulkheads in
my pump box (say Rubbermaid container) and we had alot of rain. The ground
(clay) got saturated and needless to say my pump got flooded. This was the
third time. Pulled the pump, a week later got around to fixing the...

Feeding fish: surface vs. deep by
JGW
I've been feeding my goldfish flake food, and I've trained them to
look for it beneath the surface. I did this to try to orient them
away from the surface, so that they would be better protected from
predators. I put some flake food between my fingers and hold it
beneath the surface so it doesn't...

frogs eggs by
Barry
Have a small pond and for the first time have seen frogs eggs.
We have lots of frogs around without having to have additional tadpole and
frogs.
I don't know where they normally lay their eggs, but we've always had a
couple frogs at night and early morning
around the pond.
Are the tadpoles alright...

Winterizing Question...Question 1 of x by
BenignVanilla
I have not had a lot of time to be back by the pond lately. In fact, I still
need to find the leak in the stream, but my most important task right now,
is that I have needed to repot some stuff for awhile, and have not done it.
Should I just wait until spring, or would it be cool to do it now...

I've got the bug I suppose by
LeeAnne
Yikes - upon further examination it turns out that I have not 2 but 4 fish
in my little 'bird pool'. So, the little guys will have to come in for the
winter (I've got a 55 gallon w/one catfish in it that shall become their
home).
A few questions...because I'm going to slightly expand... (and I...

Bubbles coming off of algae by
Sam Hopkins
It was posted in another message about someone who saw bubbles coming off of
algae in their pond. I saw the same thing with some algae on the background
of a concrete aquarium that I have outside curing. I have also seen this in
planted aquariums where little bubbles were coming off of the leaves...

Is Aqua UV a good brand of clarifier? by
Mickey
I am looking at an Aqua UV clarifier because it has a 2" inlet and outlet. I
have a low pressure high volume pump running about 1800 GPH capable of 4300
with no head. I am working on reducing all restriction do to pipe size. This
is the only company I can find that offers an inlet and outlet of...

Pond Plants by
RichToyBox
For everything but the water lilies and lotus, I bare root everything and
pot them in gravel. They are able to get the nutrients from the water and
though the koi take some of the rocks, they aren't rooting in soil and
clouding the water for...

Old ponds that need cleaning and other wonderful stuff by
Mike O'Connor
Hi all, I just found this newsgroup and had a few questions. I guess I
should attempt to describe the ponds on my property: there's an upper and
lower pond, seperated by a concrete dam (which I'm interested in
stonefacing, but more on that some other time) and fed by a stream. The
whole thing...

(HELP) 2 many fish (dkat) by

Dkat: I do not have any containers that would accomodate even 1/4 of
the water.
I have been runnig only the water fall since the end of June. I have 4
waterlilies and many other plants in the pond with the fish. The plants
(including a 5 foot tall Iris) are spectacular in size. I think...

Please Help Pond Fish Dieing by

I have two large ponds, One pond is higher than the other (only
slightly) and runs into the other pond. There is then a pump that
takes the water through a filter then back to the top pond. My water

The strange problem is the...

Good bio media for retaining area that can be seen. by
RichToyBox
There are any number of materials that will work as bio media, but for what
you describe as what you want, I think the window screening would probably
be best. It is dark in color, so it won't show against the liner. It can
be made into pillows by sewing a pillow case of the screen to stuff...

My First Pond Cleaning by

Howdy...
I have the 70gallon monster...
I plan to pretty much empty the pondlet, mess with the plants, vacuum
the sludge off of the bottom, not clean the sides, and refill using
tap water and declor and return the goldfish and plants. Then in a
couple of months i will sink the WH, and bring in...

Turtle and fish question by
Julie Pascal
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask Will livestock
water tanks work for fish or turtles, or are the materials
they are made of potentially toxic? I would think that
that livestock water tanks would be made out of innert
material but I wouldn't want to assume that. I do know
that...

Cattails a no me by
dkat
I spend yesterday pulling cattails out of my relatively small pond (~7X7').
I probably lost the best of my hardy water lilies in doing so and now things
look more than a bit bare (I threw water hyacinths from the upper pond into
the lower just so the fish have some shelter). While the cattails...
