Jeff,
That's a pretty large group there. African Cichlids can mean anything
from the Mixed Africans you see sold at those shady pet places to any of the
Rift Lake species to the West Riverine species. I've kept Jewels,
(Hemichromis guttatus) and Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) both West
African riverine species with Congo Tetras. They're larger and are high
level swimmers. They'd probably also be fine with some of the less
aggressive species out there, or some of the substrate spawners of the Rift
Lake species. Possibly in a tank with some dwarf julies, or some of the
milder Aulonocara species.
However, the Congo Tetras prefer the neutral water of the rivers where
they're found. So, not the best tank mates for a Rift Lake cichlid.
If by African Cichlids you meant Mbuna from Lake Malawi, then Happy
Camper summed up that answer pretty well.

Sure, just as Chicken Nuggets are compatible with my teeth! :-)

Seriously though, the vast majority of cichlids, especially African will
terrorize and kill any tetras you tried to keep with them.
