One of my Goldfish has a white bump on his nose and it's getting bigger. It
doesn't seem to have them anywhere else on it's body and none of the other fish seem affected. I think it's fungus, but I'm not sure. I was going to treat the tank with PP, as it's a pain to move him because of his size. So I was wondering if the PP dose at 2 PPM will kill my biofilter? I was considering turning off one of the filters for an hour (max) until the PP had diminished somewhat and then restarting it before the bacteria died of oxygen starvation. TIA |

I had a fish that had a white bump. I treated with Clout (an
organophosphate remedy) in a separate hospital tank. After 4 days of treatment, I saw the bump start to wither away and reveal what looked like a worm/parasite of some sort. The Clout took care of that. It didn't return. I've used PP to treat columnaris bacteria, but not for fungus. For fungus, I use Quickcure (formalin/malachite green remedy). Be careful how you use PP. Read Ingrid's page on the Puregold site on the use of PP. Use it the wrong way with the wrong water conditions (high ph, water hardness), you could end up with dead fish. If you use it at all, I would definitely not treat the affected fish with PP in the main tank. Do it in a separate hospital tank or big bucket with a running filter with floss. You need to treat for 5 or 6 hours at a time (the water has to stay pink for that long) for PP to be effective, then deactivate with over the counter hydrogen peroxide. The water may look clear after deactivation, but I'm certain there are residual chemicals left in the water that are an irritant (the skin on my arm certainly was irritated when I stuck it in the tank). That's why I never treat in the main tank. On 10/18/04 9:14 AM, Bill Stock wrote: One of my Goldfish has a white bump on his nose and it's getting bigger. no.. it wont kill the biofilter if the biofilter is established... like at least a
couple months old. it will knock off a couple layers on top of the colonies but they will pick right up. .same with the algae. I have not even seen an ammonia spike.. altho I am usually somewhat under stocked. best is not feed day before and day after if worried about ammonia spike. yeah. turn off the biofilter OR, move it to tub of water for the day if that is easy to do. a cannister filter will need to be flushed before restarting into teh tank cause there can be anaerobic breakdown products inside there. filters often contain a lot of organic material that eat up the PP. on ponds filters really gotta be stopped. however, under no circumstances stop the aeration. the worm wont look like a bump... it has created a condition where columnaris (fungus
looking bacteria) can grow and thrive. just like sometimes we get a mosquito or tick bite that gets infected. clout is very harsh for fish. for lernea or argulus there is anchors away that now contains dimilin, a very mild acting anti worm or lice type treatment. long term too in the pond.. .works for a month. sounds like the white bump could be columnaris. PP is mildest treatment and it will knock off fungus. QC.. the malachite green is actually the stuff works against the fungus. a 10 gallon tub plus airstone is a great place to treat a fish with meds in general. especially cause they can be returned to the main tank afterwards... as long as it is only one fish. I have never reacted to PP in a tank. Ingrid pbloc233 wrote: I had a fish that had a white bump. I treated with Clout (an organophosphate remedy) in a separate hospital tank.
