which is better for what purpose? cycle is a worthless scam. It is
supposed to have bacteria that cycles a tank, but it doesn't do anything.

Well after studying the blurb on the bottles today, at length, I'd say
StressZyme.

I asked in this group earlier last week what possible use would it be
replacing lost electrolytes in a fish tank?

Well the back of the bottle of Stress Coat (similar competing product) holds
the answer!

The fishes slime coat apparently loses some of it's thickness when water
changes happen (news to me, but stranger things have become apparent in my
latest foray into aquaria) and this stuff replaces electrolyes in the coat
that are lost in this process "making it easier on the fish at water change
time".

In other words - I'd say it has salts in it

There is some Oz made stuff you can buy at K-Mart over here (Alive-O Brand),
made by some company in Victoria, which is a granular blue crystaline
material, which dissolves on contact with water. It's marketed as "water
ager" and claims to make tap water into tank water.

I use it some times instead of liquid dechlorinator because amongst other
things it includes common sodium salt. It turns the water blue though and it
while it makes the tank look good for a minute until the filter sponges soak
it up, I'd say for A$2.38, it's doing the same thing as these StressXXX
liquids do.

I could be wrong, but I'm always on the look out for a bargain replacement
for high priced liquid water/fish coat conditioners

Oz

My buddy at work brought in a bottle of stress-zyme and asked my
opinion. After reading the bottle, I told him I thought it was
worthless. He was using it to treat new water added to his tank, at
the LFS advice. The lable clearly says, "For new water added to a
fishtank, first remove the chlorine with..." can't remember the actual
product name. Stress-zyme is supposed to do all sorts of wonderful
(and seemingly usless) things to tank water. There is no list of
ingredients.

Now, Stress coat, I have used. It is a rather thick liquid that is
supposed to aid fish in their creation and maintainence of their slime
coat, and it removes chlorine.

You are mentioning bacteria starters and de-chlorinators. I have lots of
experience with Cycle and I've found it's somewhat effective at
establishing the first bacteria culture to consume the ammonia, but less
effective at helping to establish the bacteria which consume the NO2 into
NO3. Manufacturers are always revising their products, but I wouldn't
recommend Cycle if BioSpira or cross-seeding media was available.

Everyone's de-chlorinator dechlorinates water, so to make themselves more
distinct, they add stress coating ingredients and/or detoxify heavy
metals and/or replace electrolytes. You are probably better off buying
the most basic de-chlorinator and following good maintenance practices in
terms of filter cleaning, water changes and not overloading your tank.
More and better chemicals don't compensate for not following good
husbandry practices (and when good practices are followed, you're really
not interested in the BS chemicals they try to sell you). jmo

*cheers NetMax on* I can't imagine how adding any unnecessary chemicals
like Stress Coat or Aqua Plus to the water could possibly improve the
health of a fish or the water quality. BTW, Genesis is very basic for
chlorine only. It's pure sodium thiosulfate. Regular Amquel is my
personal choice for the simplest chloramine remover. I looked it up and
it's only one chemical as well.
