To Stress Coat or not to Stress Coat...

I've just set up a 15 g for the first time. My tapwater has "loads" of
chlorine in it. I had the tank running for 24h with plenty of aeration by
the EHEIM 2208 I'm using, but it still smelled like a swimming pool. I was
at the LFS today, and I got a 4 oz bottle of Stress Coat, primarily for the
dechlorinator factor. I added 15 ml, measured with a syringe. I've been
reading about this product on Google, and it seems some people have had a
bad experience with this, and prefer other products over it. I won't be
getting any fish yet, as I will be fishless cycling the tank, I was just
wondering what the people here think of this product before I stock up.

I use stress-coat now and again if there is a problem with the tank as
it seems to help with the stress, funny that.. ;o)

You may have chloramin which does not gas off like chlorine. Many
water utilities use it now.

Stress Coat works fine as a dechlorinator, but is expensive for what
you get. Seachem Prime for example only needs a few drops per
gallon. The "coat" part of StressCoat is probably not necessary. Use
what you have, and buy better dechlorinator next time. (I used the
stuff for years until I knew better.)

Day after added the Stress Coat, 15ml to 15 gallons, my aquarium water
smells kind of funny, like a warm musty, mouldy smell. I have the
temperature turned up to 82 to help the cycle when I get round to adding the
ammonia. Also the filter is causing some surface bubbles which persist for
10-15 seconds, which it didn't used to do. Also, when I first filled up the
tank and for the first few days, the sides of the tank, filter and heater
had a lot of small bubbles attached, now there are none. Is this normal? I'm
still getting used to the idea of adding strange things to the aquarium.

I don't think that's Stress Coat causing the smell. I have a full
gallon of the stuff and it's works fine as a declorniator and
conditioner. Stress coat itself smells like aloe since it has that in
it, but it's not a strong smell.
