Default lighting question (here we go again)

Wife is all over me for the electric bill.

That would bring down the amps from 4 to 3.2 doesn't
seem like much but less electrical draw and temp equals less use of the
chiller and so on and so on. You get the drift.

Keep the 400wX2, raise the lights a few inches, and replace the chiller with
one or two 6" fans will remove your need of the chiller altogether.

BTW, you did not indicate your tank's temp range, but SPS will do just fine
within the 82-86F temp range. If 86 is a bit tad high for you, limit
yourself to 84F instead.

I couldnt agree more. I have been hearing a lot about chillers lately, and
IMHO a chiller is rarely needed on a reef tank. A few fans will do the trick if
aimed at the water instead of at the lights. If people would keep theire tanks
at a more normal temp.(82-84) a spike to 86-87 will not be bad at all. The
problems come when the temps spike from 78 to 88. I run 4x400 over a 5 foot
tank that is only 20" tall in an un-airconditioned shed. There are also other
tanks with halides in the same small shed that also produce heat. The outside
air reaches lower 90s here, and my tank has only hit 87 one time. Thats when
the lights start shutting down 1 by 1 simulating cloud cover ;p.
