Default Sulking fish????

Hi, I added my fourth and final goldfish to my 55g yesterday. He seems
very happy and sooo at home. My Ryukin has behaved very oddly since
his introduction. She is just sitting in the middle of the tank. She
is doing this of her own accord as fins look like they are moving
normally. She is eating well and will venture over to the usual corner
when I add the food. She usually spends most of her time in the
planted area but now she is just out in the middle of the tank. I did
a water check and the water is perfect. Cycle finished on Monday, such
joy. She has chased the new fish once or twice when he has got too
near but she returns back to the center of the tank after. It really
is like she is sulking but she has been doing this for about 24 hours
now and I'm starting to get that 'worrying feeling'.

Should I worry? The other 3 fish are so happy. Could it be that the
end of the tank she normally hangs out in is too crowded for her? Was
thinking of getting some live plants and planting the other end so that
they use the 'whole' tank a bit more.

Any advice greatly recieved.

Maybe she's adjusting to a new tank mate. Suddenly there's a new fish!

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. :-)

Wild guesses when it's obvious you didn't read the original posters
question, or at least comprehend it.
The original poster didn't say if she had put the new fish in quarantine or
not. Goldfish from petstores are notorious for bringing diseases and
parasites with them.

Fish don't sulk, any evidence of bullying? fin nipping?

Default Sulking fish????

Hi, no haven't seen her interact with any of the other fish really.
She has moved about the tank a bit more today but is still rather
solitary. I had the black moor in quarantine for just over a month. I
put him in the tank and from that moment the Ryukin started 'sulking'.
Don't know if it is that. Just put a slice of orange in the usual
feeding corner and she ventured over there and tried it but then went
back to the middle again. Usually she hangs our with our fantail but
can't say she has been near him much either. The pearlscale has taken
the black moor under his 'fin'. Still going to plant the other end of
the tank tomorrow to see if that helps.

Thanks for all your help

Wild guesses

It's not a wild guess. When I recently added ottos and a plecs to my 55g
goldfish tanks I saw a similar reaction in several of my goldfish. Disease
was not involved. One Oranda stayed behind some plants for several days
except to come out and eat.

I sure did and my reading comprehension is fine, thank you. :-)

Which take time to have an effect on the resident fish.

But some will differently when a new fish is added - I've seen it happen
more than once.

Before you panic Mellie some goldfish will react this way to a new fish. It
doesn't mean she immediately got some disease from the Moor. He was
probably so different looking than what she had ever seen before she is
reacting - as a few on mine recently did to plecs and ottos. Of course she
can be "sick" and just coincidentally is showing it - but it's most likely
not related to the new fish. If the moor has parasites of some kind it
wouldn't effect her so quickly. Parasites take time to build up.

Don't know if it is that. Just put a slice of orange in the usual
feeding corner and she ventured over there and tried it but then went

exactly, fish do not sulk....as much as Koi lo owuld like you to
believe that, it just doe snot happen. There is other reasons it may
be acting like it is, not because of a new tank mate......Lopts can
happen you do not see....which can cause a fish to act like that.....

OK .. since you quarantined then I would say it could be behavioral and this will
pass after a while. however, I encourage stepping up water changes just to make sure
there are no water quality problems that the ryukin is sensitive to. Ingrid

Default Sulking fish????

Hi, thanks for the advice. Its been 10 days now (I think) but my
Ryukin is still 'sulking'. She is eating fine but still just 'camping'
out in the middle of the tank. She occasionally wanders around for a
minute but then comes back to the same position. Her fins are working
and she is there of her own accord. The doesn't appear to be any
floating.

I have been changing my water twice weekly doing 10% at one change and
25% on another. I did a water test yesterday and had ammonia 0
Nitrites 0 and Nitrates 30ppm. I did a 25% water change so hoping that
it isn't that. She is still at the center of the tank.

Thought that it might have just been a reaction to the introduction of
our Black Moor. Still she seems to be the only one behaving like this.
The other 3 fish are doing well. My Ryukin really doen't look
'sickly'. No marks on scales or fins. Her colour is a white pearl
colour, which looks awesome, and she looks really good.

Could it be that she just likes 'sitting' in the middle of the tank?
Am I worrying for nothing? :-)

Cheers
Mellie
