I have a pair of anglefish and they both have some stringy white fuzz
coming out of one of their "nostril-like" holes and one of the fish is rubbing its nose against the glass. In another, probably unrelated problem I noticed that the breeding tube of the male instead of being the light color has a dark red spot on the end. What could this be? I appreciate any help. |

Flexibacter disease - cause = stress (sudden changes in water parameters). Treat tank with an antibiotic such as Kanamycin or Maracyn Two as they won't do any harm to the filter's bacterial colonies. Feeding a medicated food twice a day for 10 days will also help. Not Tetra's, as Flex. Disease is resistant to their medicated foods........... Frank |

Frank It's stuff like this that makes Frank such a valuable member here. I mean, who else would know or tell us that Flex is resistant to one particular company's medicated foods. All these great tidbits of info that should go into a little notebook. But 2 years from now, when my fish have Flex, I'll get on line and ask Frank what to do. -- Mister Gardener Everything Aquaria & Tropical Fish at The Krib: http://faq.thekrib.com/ |

Is Tetra still making a medicated food? Good question - every once in a while I would run across some of Tetra's medicated foods, and buy what ever they had. I think your right - ever since the 'mad cow' disease, or was it 'hoof and mouth' - well, one of those - ever since then, one can't find their medicated foods - something to do with the gelatin within it I think(?) Their medicated food for parasites contains Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole, which also worked great on swimbladder infections and 50% of the time on dropsy - good stuff, to good to just stop making it(?).... I'm getting ready to buy and quarantine some "feeder" goldfish ........ Yes - one of the things needed for a good 'quarantine preventive treatment' - I have been using eather a homemade antibiotic food, or a Waterlife product called Protozin and Myxazin since I can't find Tetra anymore. Protozin and Myxazin works good, and fish will eat the stuff ;-) ............. Frank |

I thought Tetra stopped making it....something about the same thing happening with the fish antibiotics as what's happening with the human types..over use leads to resistant strains of bacteria, etc. As for the Jungle Brands...Nothing that lives in water have I ever seen eat that stuff! Same with their parasite food....tried that on my Clowns with internal parasites ("Skinny disease" as it's often called). Nothing ate that stuff. Now people do make their own...I just don't know how. I know others here have said exactly how to. I think you soak dry food in the medication, but how and how much and how long you can save it, or if it's just make what you need to feed right then and there...I don't have a clue. That wasn't discussed so I've never tried making my own. |

I had heard they stopped making it because of over use creating resistant strains of bactiera (same as what's happening with human antibiotics). As far as the Jungle brand....I totally agree. I've not seen anything that lives in water eat either that or their parasite version. Tetras....Never had a prob getting fish to eat their anti-bacteria food. I actually still have some. Anyone know if it goes bad? It's been open for yrs, but I kept the container in a ziplock type baggy (It really smells nasty, doesn't it). |

The essential fatty acids and some of the vitamins oxidize. There can also be mold contamination leading to afalotoxin buildup. Most medicines break down too. Human medicines tend to have a shelf-life from about one to three years. -- Put the word aquaria in the subject to email me. Did you read the FAQ? http://faq.thekrib.com |

I'll toss it out right away. I've not used it since I first opened it (treating adult Angels that were suffering from the Angel virus and I had to try something to battle the secondary Fin Rot infection that usually ends up killing them). I guess it's a good thing that I've not used it since. I would have never thought about mold growing in it. = / |
