Hippo Tang Feeding

I bought a new Hippo Tang for my tank the other day, I noticed he never
eats. I feed the other fish Flakes ( Omega One). When all the other fish go
to feed, the Hippo is not around. I even added flakes when he was out
socializing with the others, but he's acting like Morris the Cat.
Is there something special I need to feed him?

Marc you have some of the most beautiful hippo tangs I've ever seen.
How do you insure getting a healthy specimen? I've purchased 3 and they
all die within 2-4 weeks despite having lots of live macros and
nori/dried seaweeds for them to snack on. Most people I talk to say
they are sensitive, but how is it that you have 3 very nice animals?

Hi Selgado,

I am a heavy feeder, and it is my opinion that a fat fish is
a happy fish and can fight off most infections. If you get
a new fish and put it in quarantine so that it is eating all
alone, it will get used to the foods you offer without
competition. That is really good advice, but honestly I'm
not a quarantine guy. I tried it with some anthias last
fall, and they were dying even with my careful attention.
(It didn't help that I had the most difficult species to
keep alive.)

Providing food multiple times a day, at least for the first
month, can really help your success rate.

Then there *is* the possibility that the store you shop at
has fish that will not survive in the first place. They
might be caught with cyanide, or simply be in bad shape due
to the store's upkeep. Petco and Petsmart seem to have
plenty of choices that people tend to rescue... (rolling my
eyes)

Do your fish look too thin when they die? Could it be a
result of your acclimation technique perhaps, where they die
more slowly? Oxygen depravation can kill a fish obviously,
but may not right at first.

When buying a fish, look for a healthy vibrant fish. If it
has torn fins, that doesn't mean it is a bad fish. It might
be damaged from capture or from other fish nipping at it.
Look at the eyes, the gills, the body itslef for any
tell-tale signs. If it looks perfect or pretty darn close
to perfect, I'd buy it.

Buying younger fish has always been my method, as I enjoy
their growing period in my tank.

So what do I feed the Hippo Tang blanched broccoli or Nori? If its nori,
where do I get it, the local fish store?

Nori is at any LFS, or you can buy it at an Asian
supermarket. Some regular supermarkets may have it in the
Oriental Section.

I'm just setting up a 35 g with a sump and your 29g tank surely is something
for me to aspire to. I'd love 1/2 that much success.

I had (still having) great luck with a hippo tang but I kept him in a
quarantine tank for 6-7 weeks so that he could get nice and fat without any
competition then he could stand up for himself in the big tank where he
learned to back up to any threat like a dog I once had would do when the cat
started taking swipes at her back sides
