Default apple snails, or other *non* pest snails

I'm new here, have been into aquaria for about 5 years now, but my question
is about apple snails. I've tried to keep them in the past, but even after
acclimatisation, they seem to die off after a week or so. I'd love to have
one now, but too scared that i'd murder it. Any clues? hints? tips?
