Default Oranda goldfish

Hi, please be blunt with me about this. I went to a local petstore a
few weeks ago and fell in love with a tiny oranda that they had in
there. Would I be overstocking my 55g with 5 fancy goldfish in there?
It would give them 11g each. I am overfiltering, using a Fluval 404.
Was more concerned about the space they will have.

Secondly, will the other godfish eat the oranda's head growth? Does
every oranda have problems with the head growth covering its eyes?

Yes I'm a novice.
Thanks in advance
Mellie

No. I have even kept 6 fancies in a 55g tank for years. The "rule" is one
GF per 10 gallons but with excellent filtration and enough partial water
changes 6 would be ok in my opinion (because I did it.). Should water
quality issues somehow become an issue down the road you can always remove
one or add more filtration and water changes.

Give it a go! :-)

Only starving GF would try and eat parts of another living GF. Something
would have to be off kilter there. My Orandas don't bother each other's
head growths and no, not all have the growth blind them in time. I also
have the water-bubble-eye GF and the others ignore the bubbles.

Ya it would be kinda overstocked, but doable. Keep a close eye on
everybody and don't fall behind with your water changes.

It is possible, but it will usually only happen if the oranda is already
showing signs of weakness. In my experience, orandas are usually the main
attackers of other orandas.

Not every oranda has problems with the hood growing over the eyes, just
ones that have been bread to have massive hoods. We had a black ranchu in
the store a few months back that got the nickname Biggie. He was a
gorgeous grade-B fish imported from Hong Kong. His eyes were barely
visible. He got on fine in the store tank for many weeks before he was
finally sold to an experienced goldfish owner with taste.

That sounds about right to me.
