Goldfish v Goldfish?

Hi
One of my two "goldfish" has just died. Actually he/she? was a Shubunkin
and lived in my garden pond with another fish which I was told was a
goldfish but appears fairly colourless. This second fish I am moving
indoors for the winter and wanted another as a companion. I was amazed at
the range of "fancy" goldfish in my local pet store but was told by the
assistant that none of these would live happily or safely with my fish. Is
this true? I thought if they were all "goldfish" and roughly all the same
size they would be OK.
I found the following list of goldfish types on the web and wondered which
of these live happily together.

only single tails with single tails. and be very careful with the new fish bringing
in disease. dont put them together right away. quarantine. Ingrid

Fancy goldfish aren't really hardy enough to be in a pond all year. You'd
need to bring them in during the winter.

Size makes a big difference, I have babies up to a year old together of all
kinds of GF, but once the single tails get bigger then the fancy GF then
they need to be single out. Shubunkins are a little bit rougher then the
fancy goldfish which are more delicate . Don't mix them in a pond, if the
shubunkins try to breed the others will be injured. put the fancy ones in a
shallower pond, and yes bring them in , they are tropical. Now having said
that I breed long fin shubunkins, and they are more delicate then the
regular ones, but again in the size the fancy ones just get banged around,
the shubunkins can get a lot bigger.
