since I am always asking things I thought I would add something.
I have noticed some people on here are setting up new tanks or are stopping by and are new at keeping fish, a few anyway, and have had questions about certain fish fitting in tanks when full grown, along with some other things, I always check Elmer's web page they have a list of fish with the size they grow out to, along with some other info, but if you want to know if a fish will fit later on its a good web page for that, I don't know if Elmer's is worldwide but I have one in pgh, pa http://www.elmersaquarium.com/nav/freshwater/index.html anyway here it is if anyone is getting new fish and wants to know size, temp ect. Nik Ps: I thought about it because it been brought up (fish size) also back when I got my first 2 Black Pacu's, and a few Oscar's about 15 years ago, The store did not mention how big they would get or how long they would live, as a matter a fact they gave me the info for a red belly, but they were wrong and I think that happens a lot, I found out, not long after while at the zoo, I seen one and showed my husband he talked to the people at the zoo and got the correct info on them, which was our own fault for not being informed about what we were getting and depending on a teenager at a store. We had those two for many years..... but had to get much bigger tanks then we first thought, and I know a few stores now that don't sell them (which I think is a good idea), I know people also who get them and want to get rid of them when they get to big, or throw them in our river which is not such a good idea at all. |

Nik Good post. I just want to remind people to use multiple sources. These pages are sometimes written by people with more good intentions than knowledge. Elmer's for example, indicates Frontosas (Cyphotilapia frontosa) as being 8" algae eaters, when they are (afaik) specialized deep water carnivores (not much algae at 30ft depth ;~) and they can grow to 13" or 16" in the wild (both of which are quite different from 8"). Lengths are also difficult to predict, due to the variables of water conditions, diet and genetics. Some fish grow larger in the wild (ie: Frontosa), while others might grow larger in an aquarium (ie: mbuna), so don't view the size estimates you read as absolutes. -- www.NetMax.tk |

I'll see if i can stop by some time next week and take the pic and post it. There are species variants on these which differ tremendously in size, so ymmv. I think some of the common plecs can reach 18", which is too big for a 55g. -- www.NetMax.tk |

I only saw that stupid fish once a fortnight. $50 for a glorious looking fish that does nothing but hide. YMMV, but don't expect to see much of the expensive little guy. -- Put the word aquaria in the subject to reply. Did you read the FAQ? http://faq.thekrib.com |

One comes out once in awhile and I haven't seen the second one since I put him/her in the 55g tank. Oh well, at least they're keeping the algae down and aren't supposed to get larger than 6". -- Koi-Lo.... frugal ponding since 1995...
