Default Clown loaches and Amano shrimps

Hi All,

Still trying to figure which tank would be best to locate my Clown
Loaches to....obviously they would be happier in the bigger tank (6foot)
rather than the 4 foot (but could still be accomodated there easily)...

The 6 footer has Amano shrimps in it. I remember someone passing a
comment that the Clowns would eat the shrimps. Anyone have any ideas on
this?

TIA
Gill

I would put my best, most interesting and most colorful fish in the 6' tank.

I can't help you there but you can always remove the shrimp to the smaller
tank.

If the clown can catch it, it will eat it.

Hi and welcome to the group :-)

Every Clown Loach troupe I've had bar these three would eat anything
greedily...they would be right up there at the top trying to steal the
food straight from my hands....These guys are a different
matter...they've certainly demolished the snails and grub around at the
bottom of the tank but are not outgoing at all - I'm hoping that moving
them to one of the other tanks will improve this...

What fish do you have other than the Clowns? (I must admit CLs are one
of my favourite fish)

Well a couple of fake sharks (gentle cat fish), allergy eater
(big one), one albino cat (tiny, left over from a pair), three
of some kind of small barb that keep living for ages, a couple of
giant danios (allow me to be hooked on phonics here). And a
couple of some other small kind that the fish store people said
would be OK. And the 2 clowns left of the 7 sigh. New tank
(55), new filter, many plants..... (same gravel two filters now
including the Whisper 30/60 from the old tank and a new one that
the "real" local fish store recommended with big ole charcoal
filter). trying to get the Nitrate down before adding more
fishes.

Also it seems like every third time or so I put something in
there new I end up with ich or something...

I hope to add some more clowns when/if the Nitrate gets down. I
really would like to have a balance where the plants take care of
the Nitrate.

I only ever really have seen a build up of nitrates in a lightly planted
tank but mine tend to be jungles in the main. I don't use carbon in any
of the filters unless I'm pulling out meds from the water - you could
post on the subject and get a healthy should you/shouldn't you use it
debate going on the newsgroup.

I have had major problems with Clowns and Ich....this time I put the
Clowns into a 15 gall tank with some dither fish and (touchwood) have
not had any ich (yet) and they have been there a good couple of months
or so - I'm still trying to pick which tank to make there eventual home.

I've adopted the policy of visiting the LFS on multiple occassions to
check out the Clowns before even considering buying them - any sign of
spots and I avoid....it makes the buying process a lot longer but less
heartache than rushing it and losing them through Ich. I would never,
now, mix new Clowns with established ones without QT first. Some on this
ng would advocate preemptive treatment while the fish are in QT - with
Ich this is probably sound advice.

Are your fish still in the old tank or have you moved them across? If
you still have the old tank up and running it might be an idea to use it
to QT some new Clowns before putting them in with your remaining 2.

Old tank is long gone.

I had thought that the carbon filter was one of the basics. I
also have a thing in there that removes ammonia and one that is
supposed to remove nitrates and a bio filter....

You know the rules, Gill. ;-) If a loach (or any predatory fish) can
catch a critter and fit part of it into its mouth, it's food. Shrimp
are tasty so fish will try twice as hard. I used to add inexpensive
ghost shrimp to a tank with clown loaches, angelfish, keyholes, and
other peaceful cichlids. Slowly but surely the shrimp disappeared.

However, I think you should put the clowns in the 6 foot tank. You
really cherish your clowns and the 6 foot tank is a better home.
They're much longer lived than Amanos anyway. Maybe you can trap the
shrimp and move them to the 4 foot tank.
