Default What disease was this?

I recently had a parasite disease hit one of my aquaria, but it
doesn't quite fit the descriptions of any disease I know of. Anyone
know what this was?

My best guess is Costia?

Could you give a description in words? The page isn't loading for me.

Gaaaah!

Right, now it should work. For a while.

No takers?
The link _should_ work now, barring further breakdowns of
communication between IIS and my firewall.

Ask Frank in Alt.aquaria, he's the disease Guru.

We had a Betta with the exact same problem at
our club last week. The spots could only be seen
when the fish was held up against the light.
We had a guess at Chilodonella but as you say,
definite diagnosis isn't possible without looking
at the bug through a microscope.

Agreed. Still, checking on the net, Chilodonella is a better match for
the observed symptoms than my guess, Costia: the size and shape of the
parasite is right (0.1 mm & flattened), the slime production/sloughing
being heaviest on the 'neck' of the fish, and that it's easily killed
by formalin.

Another possibility along the same lines would have been Trichodina,
but it's said to be resistant to formalin, and to cause ulcerations.

I think I'll provisionally decide that this was a case of
Chilodonella.
