![]() Have a red and white comet, it appears to be on its last legs, lying at bottom of tank, only swimming when it has too . It was brought home from the pet shop about a year ago, is there anything I can do to put some zing back into it? As a year seems a long time for a goldfish but people have been telling stories of when they were a kid they had a goldfish for 5 years. -- This post contains no hidden meanings, no implications and certainly no hidden agendas so it should be taken at face value. They have been in the same tank for the year so nitrite and ammonia levels should be ok and I can think of no big changes in their tank that would cause this change in behaviour, water has been changed regularly (40% every two weeks)and algae removed when the water is changed -- This post contains no hidden meanings, no implications and certainly no hidden agendas so it should be taken at face value. What size is your aquarium? 10 gal is considered bare minimum for one goldfish, with good filtration. Perhaps the fish has outgrown your tank? Steve |

EMERGENCY
1. check the water parameters: pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrates 2. do the fish physical 3. change some or all of the water 4. from the water parameters and physical decide on a course of action 5. if there is nothing specific, do the tub to tub method http://www.mu.edu/~buxtoni/puregold/...htm#essentials "soup" wrote: Have a red and white comet, it appears to be on its last legs, lying at bottom of tank, only swimming when it has too . What size is your aquarium? 10 gal is considered bare minimum for one goldfish, with good filtration. Perhaps the fish has outgrown your tank? Tank is far to small (have always known this) only 5 gals two fish in it, it is actually sons set-up and aside from the initial two day "oh wow", mum and I have done all the cleaning, looking after etc. TBH I am not a fish keeper (never wanted to be) but I still do not like the thought of something dying. Filters are changed every two weeks when water is changed actual filter is cleaned by wiping, not washed, to help preserve any organisms. As I type this the fish is calling me a liar as it seems fine just now CONJECTURE Could the fish have been sleeping/sleepy, have seen it sleeping lots of times before just never seemed to go on and on like this how long (on average) do GF spend asleep? Could it have been sleeping at night before and I just haven't noticed it sleeping so much or is this aparent sleeping/sleepy behaviour usually a sign that it is on its way out? -- This post contains no hidden meanings, no implications and certainly no hidden agendas so it should be taken at face value. It sounds like there is a problem of some kind with your fish. A 5g tank is too small for even 1 adult goldfish. I hope you plan to purchase at LEAST a 20g tank if you plan to keep them both. More frequent water changes should help until you purchase the larger tank. -- Koi-Lo.... frugal ponding since 1995...
