Default How many sea urchins can I sustain in my Nano

I currently have a Sea Urchin - pinkish sort of thing not sure of the
exact species or name - it was described as a pin cushion urchin....it
trundles around the tank picking up all sorts of rubbish on it's
spines....including the odd hermit crab hitch-hiker that takes a free
ride before dropping off....

Now, the LFS has some really great looking Long Spine Sea Urchins -
totally black in colour and I want one.....in the next few months I am
getting a bigger tank 96 IMP gall instead of my little 15 IMP gall
Nano....I have plenty of algae to sustain a couple of sea urchins short
term I'm sure....but are there any other reasons you can think of why I
shouldn't go out and buy one of these things? From experience if you
don't buy when you see it vanishes for months from the shop......

Urchins are neat.......as long as they are in somneone else tank. They
are sort of like a bulldozer and will knock things over, and a lot of
them are known coraline algae eaters. I value my purple and pink and
crimson coraline too miuch to allow a urchin to eat it. Now if I had a
big fish only with live rock tank I may consider it, and I actually am
considering it with a puffer I have as well as a future purchase of a
snowflake eel, in the bnear future.....

I would think once you get your larger tank and it matures adding one
ort two at most would be fine.....Odds are you may have to supplement
food with nori algae as they are know to consume decent quanities of
algae. Hedk while your at it how about a cowrie.......they are
pretty neat also and also eat algae.........and are also know to
bulldoze corals etc over. ;-)

I take it you are no big fan of urchins then....funny that....someone in
the UK offered me his Urchin for free....I guess he feels the same way - lol

I just think they are really neat....but right now I have more than
enough algae to keep the thing well fed....and it has to be said since
putting it in the tank it has done a great job.....as for bulldozing the
corals right now there is nothing to compete with my blue legged
hermits....absolute b*st*rds when it comes to that....my capnella is
bent double again tonight - answer is a hermit chewing on whatever there
is on the bottom end of the stalk....I've even thrown them off it.....

I've got some cowries....and those are pretty neat too....when not out
and about they look like pretty snail shells....but boy when they are on
the rampage they look like slugs with all sorts of hairy legs poking
out....not the same critters at all.....haven't seen them bulldoze the
corals yet - maybe the blue legs do such a great job of it they don't
need to bother yet - hmmmmmm.....

I need inspiration as to fish though for the new tank....I've been
browsing at the LFS and am slowly getting some ideas but will be back
here with questions when I get the tank and am eventually ready for the
fish - no rush....and afterall the cost of the stuff makes waiting
easier - you need to wait for the money in the bank again before making
additions - lol

But I'm still tempted by the long spined black thing while it is
available.....

Don;t get me worng, I like urchins but i like the looks and all of
coraline better than an urchin especiallyb in a reef tank. Urchins
are all part and parcell of a marine environment, and god only knows
the gulf of mexico is full of them..and they do make a setup look more
natural.......but i like my coraline better. I will have one at least
when I get the puffers tank setup though.

So do you think I should resist for now and wait until I get the bigger
tank and then just keep one in there as well if I am really set on them?
My clowns are already prone to nip at my corals and I don't want a two
pronged attack so to speak....and in a 15g Nano there is less food
available and less margin for error....

Better to wait. I've kept them in a reef tank before, but
after a while it's like "ok enough is enough". They are
beneficial on the reef, but in a reef tank you want a more
perfect environment. It's like bugs being beneficial to
the environment, but you don't want them eating your garden.
