I have never ever owned a single cichlid, but I bought two at the fish store
because they were on sale. These fish have ripped the tails and dorsal fins off of my puffer fish, my Cory catfish and anything else in the tank. Before they kill everything in the tank, I removed them and put them in the crayfish tank to teach them a lesson and have them chased and bit for a change. The Cichlid are ruling the crayfish tank. The crayfish are chased constantly by the Cichlids. If they go near any food or come out for a walk, these Cichlids attack like it's a life and death match. This is fish is young and small, what is going to happen if it gets bigger? .. will they actually kill crayfish? .. are they that vicious? ........ Noah Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada |

Noah,
That really is a shame. Not that the cichlids you purchased attacked your puffer, but that you purchased fish for the sole reason they were on sale. No research done on them. No knowledge of where they came from, suitable tankmates, tank size requirements, water requirements or dietary needs. And who's to blame? Why the cichlids of course. You stick them in a tank to hopefully get nipped at by your crayfish to "teach them a lesson". And if they are killed in the crayfish tank, what have they learned? Well, nothing they're dead. And you are out that little bit of money you spent on them. Cichlids are killers. So are puffers. I had rainbow fish kill other rainbow fish introduced to one of my tanks. Ninety percent of living things in the world are killers. It's a matter of we view it. Even that large pine blocking the sun from the small sapling next to it, is a killer. The solution to your problem is quite simple. Research. Stop the impulse buying and take responsibility for the animals you purchase. If you see a fish you like, go home and research it first. There are thousands of people out here, and thousands of sites that exist for no other reason than to provide information for people like you. Cichlids are territorial fish that need a certain amount of space. Most will assert their dominance on their tankmates. Most regular tropical fish are not suited as tankmates for cichlids. These fish are beautiful and extremely intelligent comparitively. You owe them at least a half hour of research prior to purchasing them. I'd recommend that you stop attempting to punish a fish for your mistake and return them to the shop from where you got them. Amateur www.amateurcichlids.com |

Fish don't kill fish, ignorant fish keepers kill fish...Your cichlids didn't
kill those fish... you did, by introducing a species of fish into the tank that were noxious to them. Do yourself and your fish a favor and read up before you buy livestock... Caveat Emptor! Amateur, that's the best reply I've ever seen to a thread like this, kudos
to you. I'm willing to bet that Noah also didn't ask if the cichlids would be compatible with his existing stock. I expect LFS sales assistants to be able to tell me a bit about the fish, even if it's only basic information and compatibility, if they don't know then I won't buy 'til I've researched. If he did ask and they said 'yes' - have a word with the store! As Madd said 'Caveat Emptor!' Red |
