ITs good to hear that no more fish have passed on......
losing fish is a part of tha aquarists nightmare....but you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep going.... I was devistated when i lost my prize pair of breeding ranchus.....they were only 4....after an autopsy and many tests later....found out that they were deeply stressed....but by what? i dont know.... lifes a mystery "Ozdude" wrote in message u... "~Roy~" wrote in message ... How are the fish doing...I accidently deleted this newsgroup so I am a bit behind any updates, which I hope are good! ============================================== Put some color in your cheeks...garden naked! Well, the tank has settled: pH 7.0, GH 10, KH 10, A0, Ni0, Na0. Plants are pearling away and growing fast. I dosed with Tri-Sulfur and Mela and PimaFix because Elaine T alerted me to the fact it may not have been Flex at all, but a parasite -I am not sure what it was - it had the symptoms of Flex, but also of the parasite, which was a scarier proposition because they are microscopic to invisible and live on the substrate. My meds wouldn't have fixed a parasitic infection but certainly any bacterial ones. The water doesn't smell so earthy these days either. I lost altogether - 3 Swordtails, 8 Neon Tetras, 2 Hockey Stick Tetras and 4 SAEs = 17. I have been cleaning the gravel every day for about a week now and I do an at least 20% water change. Cleaner gravel seems to have made a difference. After the "cull" I have decided to go with Gouramis and tetras. I am just in an interim period now, where I am contemplating re-stocking, establishing a preventative disease situation (as much as possible) and counting my lucky stars I caught it and didn't lose everything. The re-stocking will be slow - over months this time - for several reasons. Oz -- My Aquatic web Blog is at http://members.optusnet.com.au/ivan.smith |

I went and saw my Lama tonight and had a realisation (insight) while he was talking about death (of all subjects) that what happened is perfectly natural and isn't necessarily anyone's "fault". I am quite relaxed and comfortable about what has happened. If anything it's a lesson or two for me about the many aspects of the aquarium hobby. A learning experience in general about tank health. The main things I've realised are that the advice on the Internet and in books on fish selection, quarantine, equipment selection, water quality and parameters, biotoping and maintenance are all accurate and are good sound advice. It doesn't either bother me about the monetary cost of the loss actually because ultimately I have gained a mountain of experiential learning from this whole thing. I still am not too sure whether it was bacterial or parasitic but at least given the meds the remaining inhabitants of my tank have had, I know if something kills any more of them in the near future it'll either be me or a parasite ![]() Oz -- My Aquatic web Blog is at http://members.optusnet.com.au/ivan.smith |

It all got to the point where i had to isolate and salt dip my fish to knock
off any parasites and get them to purge, and treated them with an anti parasite and antibacterial..(i forgot what its called) med......I then took everything out of the tank and soaked in a mid bleach solution then washed and washedx10000, soaked them in dechlor. I added heaps of salt to the tank (enough so that no more salt can be dissolved) and let that sit for 2 days......I washed the tank out like mad and set it up, filled it up and am doing the fishless cycle all over again.... I was so sick of bacteria and parisites and using med to combat them....so i got a pondmaster UV steriliser....i have researched them for many months...i didnt know that they can eliminate water-bourne parisites and bacteria aswell as eliminating algae blooms....My brother has been using UV sterilisers for a few years and the fish look so happy...
