Film On Top of the Water

This may sound a little weird, but I have begun to notice a film, almost like you would see if you mixed oil with water, on the top of my tank. Granted the tank is only month old, but I have just noticed it with the last week or so. The color is more of a grayish color? Any ideas? Does charcoal produce that kind of residue?

I had that, too. My tank is now 5 months old, and the film has
disappeared. I suspect it is a variety NTS (new tank syndrome). My
"film" appeared at around the same time that yours did.

I think it depends on 2 factors:
1. The food you are using.
2. Adequate aeration.

I have the same problem in my crayfish tank. My theory is that the
crayfish is a messy eater and the shrimp pellets I have being using
have oils in them. I found that if I were to cause a lot of surface
agitation, the film dissipated.

I just skimp off the slick once a week or so. The crayfish seem to be
fine.

As an aside: in Outlook Express, click on Tools|Options, and then on the
Send tab. Under "News sending format," put a check next to "Plain text."

That film is probably a protein buildup. Perfectly harmless but
unsightly. The best way to get rid of it is by adding a couple of
mollies. They slurp up the stuff like it was candy.
