Evening all, I'm looking for opinions on whether it would be OK to add a
couple blue rams to my 75gal (50% plants, plenty of driftwood) community tank? I already have a pair of kribs in there and would like to add rams, but am wondering whether this will cause problems. My main tank is a very happy place so I dont want to upset the other 70 or so occupants. (The others include corys, clown loaches, eels, bettas, a redtailed black shark, gouramis, zebras, neons, hockeysticks, platies, etc.) Number one priority is not having fish that bully others--I can't bear watching that. Thanks for any comments. |

Thanks for any comments. Rams are less aggressive than kribs, IME. Like any other cichlid, they will defend eggs if they decide to breed. A 75 gal has lots of bottom room since it's wide as well as long. There should be enough space for both rams and kribs to stake out some space. I'm actually a bit surprised your redtailed black shark is such a good community member. Those can get much more aggressive than rams as they grow. -- Elaine T __ http://eethomp.com/fish.html '__ rec.aquaria.* FAQ http://faq.thekrib.com |

Thanks for any comments. Kribs are a tougher fish than Rams and in a smaller environment would certainly bully them around IMO. Almost all cichlids see other cichlids as competitors, moreso than they consider other fish families to be competitors. But your tank is large enough with enough shelter that I think they will be fine; I wouldn't hesitate to put the Rams in there if it were my tank. The first days you may see the Kribs chasing the Rams when they see them, but the Rams will find some place on the other side of the tank and keep out of the way. I've never had Kribs who have gone out of their way to bully other fish, like searching through the 75 gallons looking for the other fish intentionally, to chase them. Otherwise, the addition of Rams will not upset any of your other fish. -Derek |

![]() "sherlock" wrote in message I also would be more concerned about the Redtailed black shark than the Kribs. The Krib's have a large enough tank and the Ram's will learn to keep their distance. How big is the Redtailed shark?,if it's small then it will almost certainly get more aggressive,if it's large and is not aggressive then you might have the only one that isn't. OK, thanks to everyone who replied. Seems I have no need to worry. The redtail shark is about 5 inches. He's a nice fellow. After meals he chases the barbs for a while, but has never done any harm. And anyway, the barbs tease him, so its not surprising he responds. I am aware that he may become a problem as he grows, but so far all is well. |
