Default Expanding my pond-suggestions

We have a small 3x4x2D preformed, plastic pond. While it's doing
fantastic right now, we want a bigger pond. We are thinking going to
about 5x10, in the same spot. How should we proceed? Can I dig out the
majority of the new pond, after removing the fish and plants? Do I need
to use the current water to hold the plants in while the new pond is
being completed? Any suggestions are welcomed.

Greg
