Default sump or not???

I waited for so long until I got a tank and sump but I'm still having
problems with nitrates. one or two people have suggested that with the
amount of LR in my tank that that's all I should use and dump the sump.
would this be a good idea.
I could use the water in the sump and remove the media leaving it like a
reservoir of salt water with a skimmer and heater with some calerpa in the
base.
is this latter idea sound or bunk.

My personal preference would be to keep the sump. Dump any biological
filtration (bio-balls, trickle filter etc) and turn it into a refugium.
Growing a lot of caulerpa (with lights over the sump) will help with your
nitrates problem.

What do you have in the sump for media? If you have a wet dry filter,
yes remove the media and just use it as resevoir of water with your
skimmer heater and some calerpa (sump with refugium).

it originally came with sponges but I removed them as they seemed to be a
nitrate factory. there were 3 chambers 1/2 ceramic media and half
bio-balls. again I removed the bio-balls as someone had recommended to me
and this didn't seem to have the same effect as the sponges. this means I
have three chambers half filled with ceramic media. the skimmer is mounted
on the last but one chamber. there is a chamber with calerpa on top of the
media and that's my system except for return pump and heater.

I would suggest removing the ceramic media also.
