I have a Fluval 404 and it is to the point where I am afraid to touch
it. Everytime I break it down for maintenance it is a bugger to
restart.....My 103 was a dream...never a problem.

I replaced the primer unti and when I try to prime it it still sounds
like it is sucking air. The impeller is spinning but no water is
moving. ANy ideas?

I've used a lot of different Fluvals at work and at home, and it's odd
how some prime so quickly and other times, it's mission impossible. One
really bad time, I gave up after about 10 minutes, served a customer and
when I returned, it started effortlessly. The trick I use with Fluvals
or any other canister which is giving me a hard time is to remove and
lower the return hose output to below the level of the tank (or at least
below the water line), feeding into an empty pail. That usually does it
right away. You can also blow in and then power it up. This uses
gravity, so the operation of the primer is irrelevant.

For tanks where it is impractical to remove the return line - when you
are filling the tank with water (ie: from a water change), point your
water hose at the return line (doesn't work on spray bars ;~). This back
fills the return line and usually makes the restart painless. hth
