ok, i've reasoned with myself why arcrlic is better than glass, but I need
help with pvc pipe vs pvc hose...I'm guessing pipe has longer life? and easier to put ball valves and stuff on it? I dunno, I'm getting ideas flying by me about sumps but the basic layout will be easy, but just got complicated on where I'm going to put my refuge...my sump is going to have to be a 2 piecer because I'm afraid of taking out the style..my stand will probably collapse.. anyways, my sump will be like the one on marc's 29g but split in 2 because my stand doesn't permit it being a 1 piecer.. can someone let me know about the pvc hose vs pipe. ![]() thanks, John. |

http://www.activepartners.com/regina....php?p=266#266 for the
forum I posted it on. http://www.activepartners.com/regina.../501/5sump.gif for just the plans. Let me know if you see any flaws, or possibilites. I'm assuming it's alright to make a refuge out of the tank on the left.. Where is the skimmer going?
The first container with the corner tower, whatever the height of that tower is, make sure your PVC is 1" below it so that the airbubbles can't just travel across the top. Other than that, you are on track. I noticed a post stated the base needed to be thicker. I don't have any reason to believe that to be true. I do recommend a sheet of 1/2" rigid foam under each unit to avoid a pressure point. hmm.. the skimmer...I think it'll just have to hang on the back of the tank.
I don't even own a skimmer yet, so it's not a huge issue. I have to redo most of the measurements now to compensate for the glass thickness, but that's nothing serious. I wonder if any of the plastic shops are open on sundays.. "Marc Levenson" wrote in message ... Where is the skimmer going? ... | | can someone let me know about the pvc hose vs pipe. ![]() If you're talking about SpaFlex (white flexible PVC) -VS- hard PVC, I'd say go with hard pipe only if your plumbing is mostly straight runs. Plumbing 90s cause a lot of head loss, where a sweeping curve of SpaFlex would cause much less loss. If you prefer to hard pipe everything, there are 90s that will not cause as much loss as plumbing 90s. You'll find them in the electrical section. They are gray, and have a quite large sweep compared to plumbing elbows. A 1/2" electrical 90 has a 5" radius, a 3/4" 90 has 6" radius...etc... With that said, you can also make custom bends on your hard pipe. Just heat it up until it's rubbery, and hold it in position while it cools. Just be careful and don't try to curve it too sharply, or it will collapse and REALLY restrict the flow. Bottom line is, if you have a lot of bends to make, and you have room to sweep them, use SpaFlex and you'll get more value out of your pumps. If you don't have quite enough room to make large sweeps with SpaFlex, use electrical 90s. If you don't have any spare room at all, and as a last resort, use plumbing 90s. HTH, Kev |

you erradicate corners with hose, hence greater turnover rate for pumps

i use hose & pvc. don't buy the pre-cut hose, it's usually bundled
too tightly & has kinks. have the hardware store cut a piece of a larger roll. it can kink too if you have too tight of a radius. if you use pvc, you can glue up 2 45s to make 1 90 for less restriction. |
