Bullfrogs aren't native to California
at all. They are native to Eastern part
of the USA. They crossed the Rockies
due to frog farming, escaped and are all
over the place now.

So at one time we did eat them (or still do) if they were farmed?

Okay, looks like the native frog the French
eat is called Rana esculenta - common european frog.
They seem to import a lot of these frogs from Asian countries to eat,

The French import their native frog from Asian for the French to eat?

Kaloula pulchra. Otherwise known as Asian Bullfrog, so much so that
their native countries are in danger of being wiped out of these frogs
and the insect problem is climbing because of their absence.

Or the French import the Asian frog, to the point they're being so depleted
in Asia the insects are enjoying a party? Or is it the French insects
having the party, and wouldn't the CA BF be a good thing?

Our north american bullfrog is Rana catesbeiana.

And that is a native to the Eastern seaboard right? Whereas it has invaded,
with man's help, the rest of the N.America. (Do I seem a little confused
today, must be hormonal... or wait, let's blame California!) ;o)

Obviously the French need to taste the "California BF" since this one was
once "farmed" for food. I think the French don't like anything American
made, oh well. ;o) ~ jan

Maybe they think the american bullfrog is
like McDonalds!
The rest of it I'm going to have to wait until
I'm off painkillers....

I was having some trouble with that, too.

I think you've hit on the key :-) It's always easy to blame California,
they're just so "different" there...

Could this be payback for the foolishness of some of your countryfolk who
renamed "French Fries" after France failed to support the Iraq war?

Seriously, you're probably close to the point. Obviously, American
Bullfrogs have been considered edible but it's probably beneath the notice
of the Cordon Bleu to cook a substandard frog.

I never ate frog's legs but the people here in TN do. They claim both
frog's legs and snapper-turtle soup is delicious. I'll pass....... :-)

What foolishness? I have a hard time believing the France-French came up
with the foolish idea to deep fry slivers of potato. I think it was most
likely Southern USAmericans of French descent that came up with that idea.
I.E., Fried Chicken, Fried Eggplant, Fried Sweet Potato, etc... And they
should never have been called "Freedom" Fries, but "Fattening" Fries, imho.
So the French should be grateful to have gotten their moniker off that
product.

Bullfrogs beneath the notice of the Cordon Bleu to cook a substandard frog.

Well now you've done it, Derek. Some German Shepherd Sized Bullfrog is
gonna be knocking on your door, for calling it substandard, and 10 to 1 it
will have a southern accent. ;o) ~ jan
