pond liner

I have has a problem over the summer with plenty of dead fish. we have had
everything checked out even had pond doctors drink my pond water and profess
that they would stick their fish in that, when pressed of course they didn't
in fact put their fish in my water (so to speak) any way we had to eliminate
everything one by one right down to just the pond liner and the water
(difficult to test without the water) any way our fish still kept dying. so
we checked out just the water by putting fish in just a plastic bucket. low
and behold they live. SO WE HAVE A DODGY POND LINER the suppliers recon
there is nout wrong with it but as soon as you put a fish near it the go all
fins up.

Question has anyone else had pond liner problems?

Not here. I bought two of them from Tetra back in 1995 and 1996. No
problems at all. What tests have you done on your pond? How large is it
and how many fish are you trying to keep in it?

We have had the water tested at every aquatic suppliers in Kent they have
been using chemical tests for everything except toxins. I have been in
contact with the water suppliers who have given me a break down of the water
analysis in my water area. the pond is small only 50 galls we have had a
maximum of 4 fish at any one time.

Most folk have tried all sorts of liners for ponds, without problems.
There is the usual caution to 'wait' for pond water to mature and show
signs of algae and invertebrates colonising naturally, before trying to
put any fish in

~ Your pond is small, it is possible there is insufficient oxygen
overnight, if fish are showing up dead in the morning
~Tap water can be lethal to fish, if it is recycled and treated stuff
~Poisons may be accidentally or deliberately being applied, have lawn
treatments been leaching into the pond...
~There are some nasty fish conditions about, you might try
disinfecting, rinsing the pond, and getting fish from another source

And you filter and aerate this little pond? 50 gallons is pretty small.
I'm at a loss. If there is no filtration or aeration I would say they're
suffocating but someone would have already suggested that to you already.
There's the chance it's some type of parasite or other disease.

More details on the liner would help.....
Brand, material its made out of, where purchased...........

I know of some that have reported problems when they substituted
roofinh membrane for pond liner due to cost and availability, but
others have had good results........interesting problem, but more info
would be good.

The pond liner we are told is PVC.

I have a pump which takes water from one end to the other and enters the
other end via a spray bar. the oxygen levels are ok. these have been
checked.

The pond is raised so we do not get any contamination from any outside
source like plant food.

We have not used any plant, grass food or any other chemicals on out land
nor have our neighbours for several years.

Currently I am trying three tests. A local koi specialist is helping he is
also at a loss at to what the problems may be. we are down to 3 things
firstly the liner and secondly the water and thirdly the atmosphere. he has
supplied me with 6 fish for the following

test 1, I have the pond which has only the liner water (my water) and two
gold fish.
test 2, I have a second tank which has a butyl liner, water (my water) and
two gold fish kept in side this is to check for the atmosphere
and the third test is a bucket of water with 2 gold fish (the water being
what the 6 gold fish have been supplied with, this water is known to be ok
for fish to survive in) this will also check to wee if there is a problem
with the atmosphere.

I will report back with the results

More info on the liner. we purchased the liner from breadhurst aquatics, it
was pre cut and in a bag without any manufacturers labels or information or
instructions. I am suspicious that it may not be pucker because of this but
at the time I trusted the supplier (why wouldn't I) since this I have seen
all the pre cut liners in my area at other aquatic shops which have all the
labels etc. we were told that it is PVC liner.

if you see all of my posts you can see that we will find out soon by testing
if its the liner. there is a slight possibility that we have contamination
from some industrial units behind out house.at that point I will be in touch
with trading standards or environmental health depending on how these last
few tests go.

Are you oxygenating your water? Low oxygen will cause a fish kill.
