Default 50 gallon L36"x H24" x W12" Tank question

That would be just fine. Unless you want really large fish. There are lots
of fish that will fit in there just fine. Personally I would stear away from
filling it full of live-rock like many sal****er folks do. A few, skinny
little, fake decorations, brightly colored will look much better and give
you more room for your fish.
Fish ideas: Pygmy angels like flame angels
gobies
dragonets
clowns
clingfish
damsels
eels (alone or they'll eat all other fish)
