Looks just like it http://www.wetwebmedia.com/fwmorayeels.htm I had one about 20 years ago. I'm not even sure Symbranchius is a valid genus any more and for all I know it's the same fish as one of the ones on that page. Fenner did a nice job covering eels. One thing is for sure, you need to do some serious work on the lid. If there's an opening even less than half the diameter of the eel, it'll get out. Ask me how I know. Making sure no opening is as big as it's body diamter wasn't good enough it turned out and there are few things more pathetic than a dried up eel. One crunchy guppy - eh, but that big dried eel really upset me. -- Need Mercedes parts ? - http://parts.mbz.org Richard Sexton | Mercedes stuff: http://mbz.org 1970 280SE, 72 280SE | Home page: http://rs79.vrx.net 633CSi 250SE/C 300SD | http://aquaria.net http://killi.net |

The lid is a hinged glass lid with the plastic strip on the back part. The plastic goes all the way to the back of the tank with cut outs for the filters, heater cord, and air tube. I could probably sick a pencil though any openings, but that's about all. Of course now you have me wondering if that's enough, I did lose a "tire track" eel once. He lived under the substrate most of the time, so I wasn't really sure if he was in there or not, but one day my dogs found him on the floor. That was fun "hey dad, look what we found"!! The things we go through. |

Hi..
It was sold to me as a "Snowflake Eel", but I found very little on the internet about it. I've had it for about 2 years, so I must be doing something right ![]() :-) You make me think about keeping one of our European eels. Is your eel a nocturnal fish? -- cu Marco |

Thusly Marco Schwarz Spake Unto All:
You make me think about keeping one of our European eels. Having tried, I'd advice against that. They'll eat any other fish in the tank which they suspect will fit in their mouth, they'll rearrange anthing in the tank that's not physically bolted down (not kidding - my 50cm eel pushed around rocks the size of footballs; every morning the tank was completely rearranged), it's an escape artist, and yes, it's nocturnal. There's plenty of interesting european fishes to keep in aquaria, but eel isn't really one of them. IME, IMO, YMMV etc. |

There's plenty of interesting european fishes to keep in aquaria, but eel isn't really one of them. IME, IMO, YMMV etc. Yes he is nocturnal, but he can be quite active during the day. He lives with a Black Ghost knife fish (also nocturnal) and a Bristle Nose pleco. As Mean_Chlorine pointed out, he does eat fish. I even tried Giant Danios (very fast), but either the eel or the knife was getting them, I don't know which. I don't know how long 50cm's is, but mine is 18+ inches long and the only thing he pushes over is a broken clay pot. Both the eel and knife are fed feeder guppies and ghost shrimp (sorry guppy keepers and shrimp lovers) about 2 dozen of each weekly. This is one of my favorite tanks (ok, I'm lying, I couldn't imagine not having any of my tanks), but it could not be a community tank by any stretch of the imagination. As also pointed out, keep a tight lid on it ![]() they usually end up watching the eel for some time. Rick |

Hi..
You make me think about keeping one of our European eels. Having tried, I'd advice against that. What an eel! It must have studied interior design and sport at the GSU (Gulf Stream University). :-) Possibly a buddy for my pond mussels? There's plenty of interesting european fishes to keep in aquaria Of course, I did. -- cu Marco |
