I had one about 20 years ago. I'm not even sure Symbranchius is a valid genus any
more and for all I know it's the same fish as one of the ones on that page. Fenner
did a nice job covering eels.

One thing is for sure, you need to do some serious work on the lid. If there's
an opening even less than half the diameter of the eel, it'll get out. Ask
me how I know.

Making sure no opening is as big as it's body diamter wasn't good enough it
turned out and there are few things more pathetic than a dried up eel.

One crunchy guppy - eh, but that big dried eel really upset me.

I'd be quite upset too, I've had this one for around 2 years now and watched
him grow 4 or 5 inches. The lid is a hinged glass lid with the plastic strip
on the back part. The plastic goes all the way to the back of the tank with
cut outs for the filters, heater cord, and air tube. I could probably sick a
pencil though any openings, but that's about all. Of course now you have me
wondering if that's enough, I did lose a "tire track" eel once. He lived
under the substrate most of the time, so I wasn't really sure if he was in
there or not, but one day my dogs found him on the floor. That was fun "hey
dad, look what we found"!!
