Now many hours per week?

Hello All,

How many hours per week do you spend maintaining your acquarium? I'm
very interesting in starting this hobby but would like to get a
realistic idea of how much time it takes to maintain, say, a 75 gal
system.

Fish only? FOWLR? Full reef?

I have a 75g FOWLR, and once the initial startups were over, it
leveled out. I spend about 4 hours a week, though admitedly some of
this is just playing.

I have a 46G FOWLR and some corals, and I spend 2 hours every two weeks
(this includes getting new RO/DI water salted, feeding per day and water
changes/light vacuums). However, I spend a good 3-4 hours every 4-6 weeks
and do a thorough one over on the tank (all of the above, plus scraping
excess algae, hard vacuum, cleaning of skimmer/pumps etc). When I first set
it up it did take longer, but over time you learn the shortcuts to speed
things up.

On my 75 gallon reef I spend about 5 hours per week on cleaning,
feeding, and maintenance, but I'm am doin weekly water changes.

Sammy, as busy as I appear to be with my tanks, I believe I only tinker about 10
minutes a day.

That includes:

Adding new water that has evaporated.
Feeding my fish.
Cleaning the glass.
Checking that all equipment is running as it should.
Verifying any readings (temp, pH).
Checking lighting.
Checking livestock and adjusting when necessary so things don't touch each other
/ put them back if toppled.

I have 3 tanks in my home.

I do all the same as Marc. Daily for 1 sw 29, 1 55 cichlid, 1 38
community, 1 120 turtles + fish, 1 75 toads + fish, 2 ponds, 1 cricket
tank, = maximum 15 minutes per day + 1 hour per week for water change in
1, often 2 of the tanks. Staring at all the above, mostly during
mealtimes, takes at least one hour, sometimes two or even more. To feed
fish and glance at the equipment doesn't take a minute. Pushing the
mag-float around a couple tanks is only another minute or two.
Eyeballing the lights takes no time. Even topping all the tanks is only
a few minutes. Getting a tank started and established, visiting the lfs
a hundred times, reading a dozen books and checking a thousand websites,
however, is an obsession that took all my time and left me without a
moment to sit back and just enjoy what I had done. I'm glad that stage
is over although I know I'm susceptible to starting again.

another 5 minutes plus about 5 more adjusting the 10 or so odd things that are not
working, too bad its never the same 10 things
