Default flooded basement while filling fresh water resevoir

another idea that works is get on of those hose timers(for a garden
hose), you already know about how long it should run and set the
timer, they are fairly cheep at your hardware store, this way the bulk
of water is added without your attention, and if you get
distracted....... at least you will not have a flood!!

I currently use a AP tapwater filter to create my topoff water. I was
running some water through it this morning into my auto-topoff resevoir and
wouldn't you know I walked away and forgot about it. I've often worried
that I'd do this and it's amazing I hadn't done it sooner. I had a good bit
of water on the floor of my basement to clean up. Could have been a lot
worse had I not caught it sooner. Trying to think of a way to put a float
switch in my topoff resevoir to keep this from happening again. Is there
any way to hook up a float switch to some sort of valve that controlled
opening the faucet/input to the tapwater filter? Do ro/di systems support
any sort of hookup like that more easily ? Planning on buying a ro/di
system soon anyway. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Default flooded basement while filling fresh water resevoir

I just put together a large rubber made type container with a float
valve on it. I used to make and fill 1 gal jugs up and a few 5 gal
jugs. I have my one rodi unit setup in the hall bath which is
dedicated to fish keeping equipment and such, and I always left the
gal jugs overflow, when I got sidetracked. SInce I could place the
jugs in the sink and over flow was not a real problem it still wasted
water and filter resources. Now I have the large open top w/lid
storage container. I have a MAG 3 pump inside to allow me to pump
water out and fill up jugs etc. The float valve I used is from a
poultry waterer. Its rated at up to 120 psi shutoff pressure, so it
certainly is well above the rating of my rodi and my usual water
pressure. It works fine and total cost was "0" as I remembered I had a
few spares from when I fooled with poultry a few years back unused n
the barn.......I will probably add in an additional polypropylene
faucet or a PVC faucet about 16" off the bottom so I can fill jugs etc
without the need of the MAG pump as odds are I will need it outside in
a future preform setup in a couple of months or so.....and then I can
always use a small MIcro Jet power head that has a low flow but pushes
water easily to 30 inches.

I have a few more float switches coming so my auto topoff projects
hoefully will be finiished within a week or two.

ONe thing you may want to keep an eye on is the waste water drain from
the rodi units. The auto shutoff valves can and do stick usually in
the open positon, so you have the valve or float valve shut off and
its still pushing water out of the waste. I found one of mine would
stick periodically. I took it apart and cleaned it, but it still
stuck. A new one ws obtained under warranty, but they usually only
cost about 15-20 for a new replacement auto shutoff valve.
