I am out of "ich" med and was reading how to treat ich with salt and
high temp, however in all the pages I read I noticed malachite green
treats ich, and fungus, I have fungus med with the ingredient being MG,
but my bottle has the dose for fungus on it being that is what its for,
no dosing info for ich treatment, the fungus direction said dose twice
48 hours apart which would. not work for ich, any idea what the right
dose would be for ich in a 40 gl tank, or even per gallon and I can
figure it out, maybe someone has ich med at home with MG as the main
ingredient. being its a holiday stores are closed and I noticed the ich
yesterday but was on the way out the door for the funeral, so figured I
would deal with it today, so I don't want to wait till I am able to get
to the fishs store, need be I guess I could go to the super market and
they may have it, but if the malachite green will work it would be a
little easier.
so if anyone is around today and knows please let me know.
thanks an happy easter

how high of a temp can female bettas deal with, i have it on 81 now but
i think as far as heat killing ich it has to be at least 85-89 right? I
have an extra air hose going
I hope the funeral went OK.

Ich meds are usually a mixture of formalin and malachite green. Straight
MG or formalin can both work - just not as fast. If it's all you have,
try it. You can always change some water and go to a normal
formalin/malachite green medicine later. Follow the dose on the bottle
because the manufacturer has designed it to be a safe dose. Overdosing
on MG is very bad for tetras, scaleless catfish, and loaches.

As for temps, I've had bettas up to 84F (along with the rest of my house
and all my other fish) with no ill effects. You need at least 85F for
temperature alone to kill ich. Some temperature tolerant strains have
been reported, so watch carefully if you try high temps with no meds.

If I were you, I'd start feeding the fish twice a day with a good,
high-protein food. I would raise tank temps to 82F to speed the
parasite life cycle and dose the malachite green exactly according to
the fungus bottle. In a couple of days, when I was over the stress of
the funeral, I would see if the fish looked better and maybe go to the
fish store for some Quick Cure or raise the temperature higher.

I did salt the tank, well I use some salt any way but I put close to 2
tsp per gl in the tank, and I am raising the temps slowly, I ran out of
ich med before ...and forgot to grab more. I did not know if female
bettas could handle 86 degree's, the reason I was asking about the dose
is for fungus it says use it the first day then again in 48 hours and
thats all, and I see where that would work with fungus but with the life
cycle of ich that would not work , I used the dose on the bottle last
night, so I don't know if I should skip a day and do it that way or use
it again tonight until I don't see the ich no more then use every three
days which is how I use the ich meds, I guess I can try to go to the
store today, but to be honest this weekend was just a little to long for
me, and I don't want to go any where I have to deal with people.
The funeral went as well as one could go I guess, there was a line half
way down the street, I seen Sammy his three year old daughter and that
was very sad, I just been trying to make sure my dad, and the rest of the
family are ok, me and my sister are going to go pack up his house so his
wife and baby don't have to go back there in the next couple weeks.
thanks for asking
Nik

Don't put any more malachite green in a salted tank. You can kill fish
that way. The heat and salt is plenty for ich.

I have used it plenty of times, I put some salt in all my tanks, and have
used it at that dose (on the bottle) on the male bettas and also in the
guppy tank before, I just watch them close and if there seems to be any
problem then I change some of the water, but even my male who was very sick
at the time handled it just fine, with his fin rot, I was using 1 1/2 tsp of
aquarium salt per gallon and the antifungus, he had no problem with it.
if they look as if they are having any trouble I will do a 20% water change
but so far they look good, swimming and eating. I think if they went from no
salt to salt that might cause a problem but I use 1 tsp per gallon normally.
