Default dead snail? floating

guess this is a dumb question...if a snail is floating is it dead? I have
had a handful of problems with this one snail...thought he was dead before
so I took him out and put him in a bowl did not see him do anything for a
couple days then one night my husband came home said he was climbing out of
the bowl so he put him back in the tank, then for the next few days he
seemed fine, now this morning he was on the side climbing now he is floating
across the top of the tank, now I know when I have dropped my other ones in
the tank they sink, so I am guessing floating is bad????

=====================
You can gently prod his "door" and see if he flinches. Does he smell funky?
Sometimes my small mystery snail just sits for an entire day looking dead.
Then the next day it's back crawling around.

Some snails use a few transportation methods to get to better/different
feeding/spawning grounds. Besides crawling along a surface, they will
sometimes launch themselves downwards to let the current take them a short
distance. If they want to travel further, they swallow some air and float
to travel the currents. A floating snail is not usually a good sign, as
it's lacking something (diet, water too soft, unsuitable egg laying spots
etc). I would try offering some foods, such as blanched lettuce or a piece
of celery. Applesnail.net would probably have more food suggestions. hth

Yes I've definitely had very alive floating snails. When they die they
stink to high heaven and very often fall out of their shell altogether.

You could try cracking his shell open and giving him a little tickle
to see if he giggles. It worked on Altum this morning. I'm sorry, my
humour is kind of cracked today.

ok he is in his shell pretty tight....last week I thought for sure he was
dead and put him in a bowl (just in case he was not dead) and sure enough he
was alive but just sat in the bowl for two days.
I did notice while he was on the glass yesterday that his normal ivory color
was a little darker but he was defiantly alive then. he is a ivory mystery
snail.

thanks I'll check it out, this is my first experience with mystery snails,
got them for the betta tanks but they did not end up there because the
bettas did not like them so they are in the goldfish tank now, I don't know
if that is a good place for them but I am getting ready to read the page you
suggested and get some info now.... I have four of them, (mystery snails)
two big black ones and two little ivory ones
thanks Nik
