Default Quick filter question

Hello, just did my monthly filter clean. Boy, are goldfish dirty
buggers. The sponges were disgusting. Anyway, rinsed them in some
tank water and removed some charcoal that was in there. (ashamed to
say for about 6 weeks). Anyway, I put it all back together. Topped it
up with some tank water so I don't have to use the primer (Fluval 404).
When it started back up it released a long cloud of misty water. The
last time it released lots of 'crap'. This time just an off white
coloured water. The tank is now really cloudy. Fish don't seem too
bothered except the excitement of some debris floating around.

Is this ok? Should i put off going to bed until i know everything is
ok?

Not had this one happen before.

Cheers in advance
Mellie

Nothing like being a paranoid clown that does not have a clue is it
Mellie? May be y need to set up and keep an eye out on your goldfish
just to make sure one does not get sick, maybe even take off a week or
two of work just to make sure......

Default Quick filter question

I witness the very same thing at times...I have a tank in its 20th day of
cycling. The cloudiness has just cleared up. I often turn off the power
filter while I feed the bettas...after about 10 minutes, I turn it back on.
Then this ghostly white 'muk' comes flowing out of the filter, I don't have
a clue what it is...I've examined the mesh filters..all appears fine
considering they're still relatively new. Will someone take time to explain
this to Mellie and me. Thanks big-time...-ED

That post was obviously not from Koi-Lo.

I don't think there is anything to worry about Mellie. I'm not sure what
causes that mist, but it usually clears up quickly and doesn't seem to
cause any harm. Just don't leave the canister filter off too long, or it
will go anaerobic, and this can be toxic.

Until I got closer to the screen I thought you said the filter would
go anerotic. We wouldn't that. Bad eyes can be amusing.

I used to leave my Fluval running when I did water changes. You wont get
that cloud then. If the intake tube is too short you can get a longer one
to draw from closer to the bottom - to do larger water changes while it
runs.

Unless the Fluval was off for hours the cloud's harmless....... sleep
well! :-)

=========================
It's fine particles in the water that become displaced or dislodged when a
filter is shut off, then turned on again. Some of the 'stuff' that was
trapped in the filter is pushed out back into the tank.

My Fluval used to do that when I'd turn it back on after a partial water
change. I started holding a net under the spout to catch all the stuff that
came out when the filter started back up.

If the mist is what I get, it is debris that has settled to the bottom
of your filter and will be caught again when the filter is running.

The "crap" is food for the bacteria and any live plants in your tank.
As far as I can tell, the filter merely strains the debris into
smaller pieces easier for the bacteria to eat. It is unsightly, but
after 4 years I have accepted that cleaning filter media is going to
release some debris held back by the frame. Cleaning the media,
sponge in your case, more often will release less of the debris.
