I guess its ok as long as your the only one going with out food, me.... I
got kids who depend on me and daddy to make sure they all got cable in
their rooms, cell phones, and all the other comforts they have become
accustomed to, if we dont pay the bills they would be chasing behind us
waving them in the air.

===================
Eeeeeek! Your kids have it made in the shade. When my son was young (60s
and 70s) I thought he was spoiled with a color TV in his room! Oh, his
grandfather bought it for him. He never asked for his own phone.

I had a phone in my room at 15 but had to pay my own bills from my job. I
was also expected to buy my own clothes. Since I never cared much for TV I
didn't have one until after I was married. I did have an aquarium in my
room. ;-) Having more space after I was married I bought a 20Long, then a
30g........

Anyway,....kids sure have it different these days.

I'm thankful I was born in '60. If we needed playtime..we grabbed a ball
and glove. Bedtime was 8PM without fail...9PM when I turned twelve.
Discipline was swift and sure. If you were told to get a switch...you got
it worse if you brought back a whimpy switch...respecting elders...no sass
talk...no pierced navals...ahh..the days.

=====================
I thought I had everything because I had a tropical plant, a 10g tank, a
phone, a canary, a great rocking-chair to read in and my own record-player
in my bedroom as a teenager in the 50s and 60s. Of course I paid for all
these things (except the rocker). I don't understand why today's kids
expect their parents to pay for all their goodies.... ?!?!?! What
happened?

No - you just *think* you have it bad. When the bug hit me, I had to
get a part time job to support it - 6 days a week. If it wasn't for the
'blue law' at the time here in Missouri (USA), I would have been
working 7 days a week to support the hobby (the blue law wouldn't let
stores to be open on Sundays)! 104 tanks in the basement within a year
(mabe a little more, but not much), then, we opened our *first* store.
Now that's when you have it baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad ;-) .........

I think it started after WW II..returning GI's seeking a blissful retreat
from their horrific experiences over Europe. Soon to follow was the Korean
conflict...the Cuban Misslie Crisis, the British Invasion, Drugs,Sex &
RocknRoll, then the Kennedy assasination... the Vietnam era...IMHO..it seems
that parents were dealing with a fear-factor of a government two-stepping
left and right on Capital Hill, -and parents wanted to spoil their children
out of that fear. It's understandable in a sense.
I hope my rambling isn't found offensive.

In my room growing up, I had a transistor radio, my pellet rifle, a barbell
set and a 10g w/airstones, a rocker and two dogs. I had my household choirs
for allowance and every summer cutting yards for the neighbors. Wait..the
fish were spoiled too..best I can remember!! I think the tap water was
better back in the '60's as well. My local water, back then, was so pure
that it didn't require ANY treatment until it became law.

But it wasn't that generation (baby boomers) that were spoilt rotten. I
lived in a middle class neighborhood and just about all us teens were
expected to get pt jobs and contribute to our support. It never occurred to
us that our parents should provide the expensive "in style" clothing, radios
or hi-fi's, TVs and phones for our rooms. Those luxuries we supplied for
ourselves. My mother told me later on that taught us the value of a dollar,
managing money and good work ethics. She was right as I've never been in
debt in my life.

Before the age of 15 I also had chores to do and was paid $5 a week to do
them. Ugh! :þ I despise housework to this day.

I always remember having to use something for chlorine in NYC and here in
TN.

I think it depends on what kind of spoil you do, and how your children
handle it, I also think people do it for several different reasons, kids
today are very different then years ago..
My husband lost his mom shortly after he was born ..from cystic fibrosis,
her family blamed him, he had it hard growing up, so he thinks its his job
to make sure our kids are happy, I think because he was not, We always laugh
because every one fusses over our kids, they are so sweet, they will do
anything for you, they have such good manors (which is hard to find these
days) now lord knows they don't always act that way at home, and we always
say send those kids to our house (we sometimes lock our selves in the
bedroom to get a brake lol), but we are glad they know how to act out side
the house, all three are high honor roll students, two go to the gifted
center, and all in all they are good kids, If at any point these things
would change like their grades or behavior, all their things that we work
hard for them to have would be ripped out from under them quickly, but I
have to say they do choirs every day, do homework before they go any where
and both older ones play sports and have practice five days a week, so they
are good kids we don't mind spoiling them because they do what we expect of
them..

I still buy filters when they are on sale, but I now have more filters
than aquariums, so the last two are still in their box. When I was
growing up, filters were the most expensive part, so you could never have
enough or good enough filters. Back then (14 years old?) when I didn't
have enough money, I worked at a pet shop for store credits. Now I have
money, but I still can't seem to completely shake all my fishy habits.
If I see an FX-5 for sale, I'll probably buy it and then I'll have to
build a 400g tank to use it ;~).

Amen!
If I can't fit a new fish in me tanks I'll buy a FBF with built in UVC and
vibration shaker or something.
Way I see it, he who dies with the most stuff wins!
:-)
Thinking about converting 100 of me 2 footers into corner side drop air up
lift filters. Just a bit of glass in the corner, air uplift tube thru matrix
and then some floss that gets squeezed out once a week.
A few years ago all I wanted was cannisters.... now I have dozens and I'm
thinkin it's time to go back to basics on most tanks.
Aside from fish I gotta birdy but other than that I save for da fish.....
Never quite know when someone might bring me something really nice and I
have to setup a coldwater marine tank or a fry rack.
For that I have my mountain of fish junk.
I can build anything almost with bits of yesterdays technology, fits
together like leggo.
Prob have 50 big styrofoam boxes of impellors, plumbing and tubes etc.
Luv it!
Just wish I didn't have to explain cycling so often is all!
