has anyone ever tried using the bubble nest of another betta to get the
one you are breeding started. I have a betta I am breeding and he usually
has a bubble next however since trying to breed him he has refused to
build one, I put some of another's betta bubble nest in there to see if
he gets the clue, I have read of this being done but never did it
before...is it likely to work

====================
I don't think that will work. If you set him up in a 10g tank with 5" of
water, plants (preferably floating plants) and keep him at 82F and very
well fed, he should make a nest. If not, then he's not ready to breed or
something else is wrong.

They make nests for me but have never successfully bred here where the
water is very hard and alkaline.

Yeah I know how to breed them...not really the problem, but any way it
worked out about a half hour after putting the bubble nest from another
betta in there he started adding to it and made his own, so all is well, he
was a little preoccupied with her and I think forgot....the problem with him
is he is not mean at all, he has no problem with other fish i think
including betta's, he is just happy as can be to have her there....so its a
little strange, not like a normal spawn....they are just kind of hanging out
together at this point but he did get the idea and built on to the nest...

I'll say! But then they're all individuals. I remember a blue betta I had
in the 1960s. What a sweetie he was. He never ripped the females fins and
almost always bred with any ripe female I put in his tank. He never ate the
fry and was an excellent father. You just don't find many like that. I had
males that wouldn't accept any females and died fryless amid their bubble
nests. Of course the rest were somewhere in-between.

That's very interesting. :-)

LOL!! Give him a chance. He'll most likely get down to business when you
least expect it. ;-) Before you know it you'll be crawling in fry. You
need to start saving jars and containers to put them in when they need to be
separated. Some spawns are pretty darn big.

I got these really neat containers, have a hole in the middle of the lid for
air and are not a bad size, female bettas are sold in them, I got some from
a store a while back, the girl just gave me a stack of them, which was
nice....its funny how different bettas are from one another..I want to get a
yellow and black and I think unless I get them on the net I am not going to
find them here.
thanks koi-lo...let you know what happens

I know the ones you mean. Wally World sometimes sells their bettas in them.
:-) I saved mine as well.

I got a beautiful pure yellow from PetsMart about 5 years ago and haven't
seen them anywhere since. I hope you find one. Good luck!

My husband always is dragging me away from the betta place in the
store...but I have looked at the *reg* pet stores and all I ever see are
blue (mixed with some red) or all red, white body w/ some color fins usually
mixed, and some are very pretty but not for breeding, I know a couple
breeders in this area and have got a couple betta's from them, but they
never have black or yellow either, I seen a purple one on the net the other
day but I am wondering if it was just the cam or the way the pic was taken
but it was pretty...
